Working in a university/hospital environment it became evident that I needed to 'crystallise' my pension before the associated benefits etc were whittled down by severe tax changes. So I took partial retirement at 61 and now work three days a week, with super long weekends. At the same time I wound down most of the management and the NHS stuff that I was doing - very happy to see those in the rear view mirror! I can now concentrate on enjoying my teaching and research and watch, bemusedly, my younger colleagues complaining about all the crap.
This allows me more time for model railways, a miniature traction engine and, of course, my M3W. Unfortunately, my wife is becoming increasingly disabled with Parkinson's disease and orthopaedic problems, so my extra time at home is opportune. There may yet be some light at the end of the tunnel this summer.

The thing is we none of us know whats just around the corner.
I am a Positive Thinker - my "glass" is always half full as they say,but even I ponder how much good active time I have to look forward to.
My recent health scare puts things into even sharper focus.
Tim, good for you - and I hope that you and your wife can now enjoy a lot of time together.

As for positive thinking, totally agree. However, one of my friends owns the local undertakers! Conversations with him can be very sobering.
