Run it up the road with the bonnet off. There are two triangles of rubber under the front and if missing can make this noise. It's more of a knock than a creak. Suspension bushes can do it too- don't worry you will find it - sound travels !

Their is a plastic bit that is just over the top of the instruments, I believe it is there to keep water out of the wiring and instruments. It made all kinds of racket when hitting a bump in the road or if I hit the right RPM. I got some anti-vibration stick on pads from a hardware store to stick on the top of it. You also can find it at a good car stereo place that does installations.

Next time you hear that sound, reach up behind the steering wheel and hold on to the ignition key housing. The housing was clicking and squeaking. Very frustrating because I heard the sound coming from farther away. My fix was a wood shim until I got around to removing a little material from the housing, good luck

Problem with noise around dash was solved by the Service Agent. they removed the panel in the front of the dash & tightened all bolts.
They also found that there is noticeable play in the LHS bush of the central steering rod, which does cause a rattle on rough surfaces. Surprising as the car has only 2,300 km. Not a safety issue.

It must be TADTS (They All Do That Sir), as my M3W's steering rack has some play in the LH side as well. I was told by a person that should know at the factory to put some more grease in and refit the rubber boot. I did, it made no difference. It has been the same for the last 12,000 miles without a problem or change.
