I am planning a 2-car trip around Scotland and want to include the most spectacular roads wherever possible, and also to avoid the worst road conditions (some of the roads in Oxfordshire are so bumpy they are practically un-drivable in the 4/4) The itinerary is ;
Day 1 from down south to Balloch, Loch Lomond, 6.5 hours
Day 2 Balloch to Fort Augustus 2 hrs 41min
Day 3 Fort Augustus to Ullapool 1hr 53m
Rest day
Day 4 Ullapool to Dornoch 1 hr 30m
Day 5 Dornoch - Pitlochry 2h 32m
Day 6 Pitlochry to Sunderland 4h 12m
Day 7 Sunderland to Home 4h 38m (a likely story)

Obviously plenty of time to detour/stop-off most days. I wanted to get to Durness/John O'Groats but a rest day has been inserted in the programme by others!. (I might have a solo blast to John O'Groats by myself)
Questions:
1. Who in their right mind would try this in a Morgan?
2. What on earth would I to do on the rest day in Ullapool?
3. where are the best roads?
4. same as question 1
I'd post the journey maps but haven't developed the IT skills yet.
slainte!

Ullapool to Durness is an amazing road. I presume you are talking that towards Dornoch. What time of year are you going? Do you fish, as lots of nice trout lochs around Ullapool to spend a day or a boat trip to the Summer Isles.

Not a fisherman, I regret I waste too much time on golf,

The present plan is to go cross country Ullapool to Dornoch, hence my possible solo escape.

If you packing your clubs, Ullapool has quite a cute little golf course..

Btw a Morgan is perfect for the trip, the roads in Scotland are rather better than Oxfordshire. I was shocked how bad they are there..

Can't help thinking you'd be missing out big time if you just went from Fort Augustus direct to Ullapool.

Why not go via Eilan Donan, Applecross (via the Bealach na Ba), Shieldaig, Torridon, Kinlochewe and Garve?

242 miles of absolutely stonking scenery and wonderful roads.

Well it's just that we've booked hotels at these two places - how we get there is up for grabs. I'll get my map out and make a route that takes in some or all of these - many thanks

Well, there'd be two sets of clubs and a trunk full of make-up. I think I might be able to sling the clubs along the running boards like a cavalryman's carbine.
