This had passed me by too, it will be interesting to see the long term effect on speeding.
Cruise Control almost an essential not an extra.

Yes I read an article on pistonheads on it.
I guess it is time to look at specing the next car with the radar guiding cruise control. I am told the one on new Audi's had a minimum setting marked "bumper-nuzzling"
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

It is a bit weird that virtually anyone can go out and buy a car that will waft you from zero to minus £2500 and leave you without a licence in less time than it takes have a good sneeze. The future of the UK automotive industry clearly requires some downsizing in power plants. These should be more than enough to power the future sports car industry.

Is it? The m'way speed limits were set when we were driving Morris 1000's, Anglias and Minis. Many urban limits are unrealistic, especially 20mph ones, [if you can't think of any, I would be more than happy to show you some in my area].

The speed bands show 1mph above as the penalty trigger. 31 for a 30 limit etc.. It will be interesting to see if any discretion will apply as can happen now. The 10%+2 mph theoretical band where SAC can be offered if no previous within the timescale. There have been murmurings about zero tolerance. It could pose issues for accuracy of speedometers and cruise control. The cameras are calibrated to accuracy standards but how many speedometers are matching that standard?

They are getting tougher in Italy too. In the news this week:
Do you drive using your mobile phone? Suspended licence, for a period ranging from one month to three, even at the first violation. "We are facing a real emergency, there is a whole generation that comes to driving with the habit of using a mobile phone since they were 11, 12 and continue to do so even at the wheel, without any caution." According to data from the highway police and the insurance association, the percentage of incidents caused by the use of smartphones grew in recent years, until it reached 20.1 percent of the total.
The emergency is, in fact, the people who use cellphones whilst driving. To call without bluetooth, to send and receive sms, to chat on WhatsApp, to browse the internet, even to make a selfie at the wheel and send it to friends. The agreement between the Transport and the Interior ministries speaks of a tightening of fines and penalties: today the fine is between 160 and 646 euros plus the 5 point deduction from the licence.
The deadly mix of speed and driving, however, raises the numbers again, so that Minister Graziano Delrio has come to speculate that "eighty percent of serious road accidents arise from the use of the mobile phone whilst driving." Nencini insists: "It is a growing phenomenon, we must act very quickly to choke it off."
Penalties will also be significantly increased for speeding heavy vehicles and the specific crime of "road homicide" will be introduced. Up until now fatal accidents involving alcohol, drugs, excessive speed or negligence have been treated under general laws to cover unintentional homicide.

I have long held the view that the use of a cell phone whilst driving should be punished in the same way as drink driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
So in the UK a 12 month ban and a substantial fine.
I don't really like using a full hands free system, other than to tell the caller "I'll call back when it is safe to do so".

Glad I got shot of the MB. With an autobox and light throttle it was all too easy to exceed the posted limit at lower speeds... The digital/GPS speedo fitted in the 4/4 will get more use now. The OE fit is totally useless after a few miles...
