When you start to ask how it would work? Someone who is not in work has no income (except, perhaps job seekers allowance). So he/she is caught doing 60 in a 30 limit. What penalty? It should be 150% of income so you and me pay the fine...Yea!
Just think of all the other variables!!

Actually I was talking with a police officer the other day on this very subject. His view was that in general satnav's whether bespoke or on phones are pretty accurate on the mph or kph front and most are pretty up to date on the road mapppings and speed zones, in fact to within 1m. The one aspect when they can struggle is when a vehicle accelerates very quickly in a gps challenged area, as the trigonometry mapping of the position can be temporarily lost and accuracy lost (delay on accurate speed readout). He said that most car speedos were in fact 5-10% inaccurate and were deliberately set to underead speed.

Umm, no, car speedos are deliberately set to display up to 10%higher than actual, so overread. This allows for tyre wear etc.
Although, as pointed out by Top Gear a good number of years ago an (as in one tested) Mondeo actually read 30 mph when the car was travelling at 31 mph. Can't remember now, but I think that was on a calibrated rolling road.
Car speedometer are allowed up to 10% over, but not under.

I'm not suggesting this as a replacement for driver observation.
However, regular updates (mine every 6 months) keep things pretty well up to date.
I'm suggesting that's the reason for Peter J's dash Satnav warnings, rather than a camera recognising a speed limit sign...

Traffic sign recognition was offered on the Jag XE that I ordered. I didn't order it but perhaps at €337 I should have.

My SIL's Mondeo has had the speed sign recognition on it for about a year now and I was impressed with it.
It also has the radar sensor linked to the Cruise control and keeps you the safe braking distance away from the vehicle in front.
Lane departure alarm and blind spot in the mirror warning - very impressive but not very engaging.
One step closer to the motorway car trains I think.

Ooh. Do they work in conditions of (very) poor vis?
Wonder how the average motor tech will fix such things when they go wrong? Will there be error codes to read?

Graham, it is clearly both camera and GPS driven. there is a bit of the Salisbury ring road where the speed limit is 40, but the parallel service road is 20. At one point the 20 sign is on the barrier between the service road and the ring road and if i'm in the inside lane the camera picks it up, displaying 20 on the dash, but if i'm in the O/S lane it doesn't see the sign and I don't get the warning.

So I put a bit of tape over the camera and I don't get the 20 mph warning. Conclusion: the camera is the primary warning, the GPS confirms.
