May I recommend the Louis Latour Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir ? Made in the Var by one of the most famous Burgundy houses, it's a fine wine, and represents very good value compared to the stuff from Burgundy itself.

Thanks Giles, I'll try that one

Great recommendations from Giles (I'm making notes); but Stewart, I thought your preferred tipple was ginger beer or dandelion and burdock?

As a fan of Amarone during the winter months, we like Ripasso wine to go with steaks, etc, on the barbecue in the summer months. Ripasso wines are sometimes casually referred to as “baby Amarones.” The same combination of grape varieties from the Valpolicella zone used to produce Ripasso are also used to produce Amarone. The two wines also share some of the same aroma and flavor profiles.

Whilst not strictly a Ripasso (they've patented the process), Masi's Campofiorin is one of our favourites and a local restaurant orders carton's of it for us so the price is very competitive. Rich and mouth-filling, with soft tannins and a velvety, savoury finish it's an excellent choice for the usual barbecue fare. wine

indeed, as I'm cutting down massively on red meat, the big reds are being opened with less frequency

Lidl did an Amarone and might still do it - for £16. MrsW had a bottle bought for her 65th and it was surprisingly good.
We don't usually go below £20 for reds. Wine is a family indulgence.

Big reds go with good cheese . . . .
And pasta
And game birds
And some fish

So no need to cut back on red wine!

Indulgence or essential? We veer towards the latter.
Food without wine? Just wrong!!

Anyway..Lidl Tenuta Pule Amarone della Valpolicella £16.99 and still available.

Maybe so, but I've never found a wine that really goes with my bacon and eggs at breakfast.
