The is considerable road rub on the Oil filter housing! I have had that modified so it is now 5 mm higher than the sump. I will post up what Neil Argrave did to make this work when I pick the car up, hopefully tomorrow.
Be interested in seeing how that works. I've a sheet of ply in garage so maybe it is time to mock up and F1 style skid plate or alternatively this is for sale linky

A friend of mine has just made a sump guard on a Caterham using the front bit of an old wooden surf board
His theory is that the wood will take the impact, splinter and not transfer the shock
I thought this made a lot of sense Interesting......

No I don't yet Neil and I must admit I'm in two minds in terms of the potential damage that my be caused if the guard gets a good hit.
Seeing the pictures that were posted where someone had badly damaged the guard is reassuring but I'm still on the fence. The Wolf sump guard is more of a sacrificial plate or a rubbing plate.... It gives you the opportunity to back off if you're driving slowly over an uneven surface. In the event of a hard hit, I'd imagine it offers more protection from catastrophic damage rather than causing more damage itself. My son's school features about 10 speed humps which I go over very slowly - there are about 2 which always just catch a bit. Unprotected I'd be hitting the drain plug, instead I'm scuffing Wolf's plate. I have no connection to selling these things, but they do more good than harm. Our engines are worth protecting.

At the other extreme, I found a pub exit that combined, slope, speedbump and drain in a perfect storm. It was fine going in, but coming out they colluded to firmly drop the car onto its sump guard. No harm was done - and I'd far rather the guard took the load than the sump plug. Will

Will Agreed , have already heared some heartbreaking/sumpbreaking stories of crushed sumps , I don't want to go there. It seems its a replay of the v6 saga with the low sump and having to go to Jaguar for a remedy.

I had my +8 on a ramp for a check over before the road trip in June. The rear tyres have enough left for the trip and the fronts have a little more.
I have been running them at 22 psi and the rears are wearing more on the outside which suggests the tyres are a bit under inflated. Anyone else experienced this? How was the sump? I've been told mine needs replacing after the trip to Scotland. Seems they are on the list of consumables for aero owners. Interesting I have replaced my sump once already. This time small mark on the very bottom. Looking at different sump guards mounted on the chassis. There is considerable road rub on the Oil filter housing! I have had that modified so it is now 5 mm higher than the sump. I will post up what Neil Argrave did to make this work when I pick the car up, hopefully tomorrow. As you know Crunchie, our neighbour with the Aero GT took off his oil filter coming out of the Royal Windsor Farm shop on the gate stop and being a new Aero owner did not stop driving until the red light came on and then called me! We got it up to MMC and to begin with they thought they would have to replace the engine, but in the end it was rebuilt as the damage was not as bad as first thought. Crunchie, I hope to get the same fix as yours fitted to the oil filter housing on my Plus 8. Like others, I'm also interested in having a sump guard, but want one attached to the chassis - I do like Asbo's wood idea too.

Since a sump guard is fixed in the block engine in case of big bump the damage won't be small, the ply wood or alloy fixed in the chassis it's the way to go but it's not simple to install, that's the price to paid for be safe. I have learn it by the hard way long time ago with my Maserati Bi-Turbo

I guess a big bump will cause huge damage with or without the guard - I doubt the guard will contribute to additional damage in the event of 'el gordo'. However, the balance of probabilities is that the guard will protect against 99% of events which would otherwise damage the engine....

I'm not sure if I hold a record for damaged sumps or not but I went through 8 in total on my series 4, including 1 within 30 minutes of it being replaced!
The new adjustable suspension on my S5 means I can increase the ride height but unfortunately it's not a simple button push option :-)
