I have decided to install a damper on the DHC and I find lots of them with different dimensions in the NAPA catalog.

Rather than tax my brain trying to re-inventing the wheel, does anyone know what damper is most appropriate?

Thanks, Jack

Hi Jack.
You are not alone, I am also trying to find out which damper to use for my 1970 4/4 which has developed the dreaded wheel wobble. I have tried everything I can think of including rebuilding the suspension new dampers blades even new wheels but to no avail. I have heard talk that VW polo steering dampers might fit, I looked at motorbike ones but they were all about half inch to short, if I get stuck I think Mulberry fabrications have developed a kit so I will resort to paying a bit more in the knowledge that it will fit and should just bolt on. If you do in the mean time find out which fits I would love to hear about it.

Steve,
Have you checked that the chassis and cross head are free from cracks? Plus, check the triangular gusset plates either side near the bulkhead, which are welded to the chassis legs - there should be no rust pushing them away from the chassis...

On later cars these plates are much longer, giving better support. New Elms sorted mine out after years of me trying to trace why St. Morgan's Dance reappeared over a period of some 3 years for no apparent reason.

Cheers,

Graham (G4FUJ)

I've just been to Mulfab and Peter can supply the damper.

Here's one on the bench.......

And here it is offered up to a Morgan on the ramp. All being well I can post an "installed" picture later.

I put a new chassis on my car a few years and not many miles, still looks new but I did check it and the front cross frame and although I came across a couple of loose nuts unfortunately it is still the same.
Thanks for the pictures Dave I assume you are putting the damper on your car? If so I would be interested in whether it makes the steering much heavier or not.
Thanks
Steve

Not for mine Steve, I have a rack!!
I asked about it because the question had come up here. I only have experience of a steering damper on my Ford Anglia in 1970. Anglia's were prone to severe wobble, and I happened on a damper when I bought a scrapper for £22 to dismantle. It was basically a short telescopic shocker which bolted to the inner wing and attached to the steering linkage with U bolts. It made no difference to the weighting but eliminated the wobble completely.
The one pictured above is fancier - looks like a bike pump, but does the job well I'm told. It needs one hole drilling in the cross frame close to where the hand is in the second photo.

Hi Dave

resurrecting an old thread - did you actually fit one, or see them fit it?

I'm considering fitting one, their webpage says "no drilling required" but the pdf instructions state a 10mm hole.

Cheers
Nigel

Give Mulfab a ring Nigel, that car was being fitted at the time, but when I went they were only available for steering box versions as far as I can remember.
Over three years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was fitted at one end but not the other when I was there.

Guys go to Geoff's shed he is very helpful and you can buy the appropriate damper for your car on eBay, I did so a few weeks ago. drive
