Good morning,

Whilst reviewing Morgans (1967), have come up with a quandary regarding engines.

I have been advised to steer clear of the Ford engine in the 4/4 (Series V) due to Reliability / Maintenance (the ability to work on it), stick with the Triumph (+4 Series 1) unless you want it as a house object (car mechanic / restorer).

Then again, have been informed that the Ford engines are good / reliable with better performance (dealer / restorer).

Without causing an argument on the site, can anybody enlighten me further?

Ford engines after 1965 ish are in my experience reliable. That's the 1500 pre cross flow and even better, the 1600 cross flow. As with any old engines modern improvements make maintenance easier e.g. electronic ignition, coil, plugs, leads and carburetor if it's not a Webber type.

Both pre-crossflow and crossflow Ford and Triumph engines are capable of high mileages and reliability.

They are also perfectly capable of being stripped and rebuilt in the home workshop with little or no need for special tools. There is also a lot of literature available on rebuilding and tuning both engines.

However, what you need to consider is the issue of spare parts availability. Pre crossflow and crossflow parts were once very common but are now difficult but not impossible to find. A complete spare engine which could have been purchased for £100 is now 500 plus.

Likewise, with the TR4 engine, most parts are available through places such as Moss, Rimmers and The TR Shop but I have been looking for a good, usable crank for my spare TR engine for the past 5 years!

Hope this helps

When I was leaning towards a TR engined Plus 4 I was given the opposite advice by a friend who knows Morgans i.e. go for the Ford Kent engine. And I did. But this was not so much to do with reliability - just that the lighter more tuneable Ford engine, combined with its nice gearbox, gives a better drive.

Others on here will have far more experience than me but there's probably not much between them when it comes to reliability and parts availability - although the Ford was made in much greater quantity so that should give it an advantage. You won't be disappointed with either car.

My first Morgan (1982) was a 4/4 with Ford engine. When I bought a +4 (1994) the TR powered car was terrible. Un reliable and very difficult to steer and park. Many time I wished for the 4/4. But as this was a 4 Str and Mrs. Button wanted the extra space I stuck with it. It took a lot of time and money to get this TR reliable and fun to drive. It now has an OD (which I use very little). But it has been across the US at least 3 times and to Europe. But is a problem with a TR engine. Poor aftermarket parts being one of them. Also poor advice as to what to do about problems. In New Orleans the mechanic knew nothing about points. In Southampton it stopped in the middle of the road. What a disaster getting it to a mechanic. But this mechanic understood what He was looking at. Lately it has been tappets that did not hold together. "Made In England", I don't think so. Maybe the box was.

If I wanted an old Morgan for touring, I would remove the engine/moss box or 5spd in case of a Ford and replace it with a Zetec and 5spd or a Duratec (If I could afford it). Store the old engine/transmission so the Market Value stays intact.
