I think the XAS were one of the early Asymmetric tyres in the X series. I do remember putting them on the front of the Beetle when I was young. Shortly afterwards I mounted a roundabout without provocation.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Maybe the current XZX has a better compound, that would explain things.

You are correct Dave. Tyre compounds have changed a lot from the good old days....thank god!

I had a nearly new MG Midget back in the early 70's (hell of a lot slimmer then!) it had Michelin X tyres and I could not wait to wear them out, trouble was no matter how I tried they refused to wear down so sold them to another mechanic at the garage for his Escort and bought some Dunlops.....transformed the car, it would under steer like mad until the tyre change.

It's very comforting to read that, after all these years ( and we are talking last century ) the memories of the outstanding ware qualities balanced against the poor wet weather qualities of these tyres were shared by many. Were we all that silly or did we all just thrash around?
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

Colin,
The Plus 8 is 3 years old and has 32,000 miles. The Avon ZZ3s are dated 2011, so I assume they were on the car from new in 2013. The rears are 2mm above the wear marks, the fronts are at 6.5mm. I'm taking the car on a track day at Castle Combe and hope to wear the rear's out...but that means changing all 4 as ZZ3s are no longer made...
I intend to fit Dunlop Sport Maax GT, as well as great performance they have the big plus that they have "Run on Flat" capability like a run flat, but without the need for a special rim.

I have xwx fitted, couldnt comment on wet weather driving yet or even pushing on in the dry but they look right which is much more important than road holding. (I will probably regret saying that) they certainly do look the part Sorely tempted as I'm due a new set of boots soon

How does that work PJ? It must be a harsher ride surely ? I suspect that there's so little sidewall showing around those Aeromax wheels that it makes very negligible difference. I'm still on my original ('09) tyres so these will need to be replaced soon even though they are unworn - will take a look at the Dunlops.

But the ride is surprisingly good, perhaps down to the slightly OTT suspension! HOWEVER... Dunlop don''t offer the SportMaxx GT in the size I need, so have to use the SportMaxx RT. I've had them on the last 2 Mercedes including the AMG C43. Good enough for that so good enough for the Plus 8!!
