Peter - the sportmax rt2 has been released recently. You might want to check if you can get these in the right size. The Dunlop UK web site does show them for my Aero Coupe which are the same I believe.

I would also consider the new Michelin PS4. Whilst this is called Pilot Sport like the PS 3 etc it is actually a development of the Pilot Super Sport and so a great tyre for the Aero chassis. I have put the MPSS on the Series 2 and it has made the grip/handling wonderful but not wrecked the ride.

I used the sportmax race on the back of the MB E63S which were more like track day tyre and when warm they were amazing but outside that a bit difficult so avoid them.

Actually in all this talk about tyres, I've just realised Davphil asked about XZX's and Gatewright on a previous thread fitted XWX's which have a different tread but looking on the tinterweb there is a massive £200ish plus cost each per tyre between the two

How come ?

Well quite simply they have to pay for a new one of these every so often - or inflation ..

This is now replaced by the Pirelli P Zero PZ4 and when the Plus 8 tyres need replacing, I think they'll be my choice providing they do the correct sizes as my experience of them on another car is very positive?

Michelin XZX were the Golden Grail on My +4-4STR. Until I could not get them in the U.S. Now I use a Chinese tire called "KUHMO" which IMO are ten times better.

However I was using YOKAHAMA on the +8 Bits. Now switched to Michelin Premier A/S (not expensive). I like the Michelin Prem. a lot better.

To get back to the original questionb: what size tyres are we talking about?

Replaced my Conti's with the Michelin Sport 4s unfortunately having great difficulty in getting the rear to drift and thats in the wet....Seriously though I've done just over 1k since fitting them and so far I'm very impressed with the wet and dry grip levels also under braking there appears to be a marked level of improvement. Road noise..cant tell I have sidepipes

Khumo is a Korean brand just for reference. I would not be inclined to mix them with all the Nankangs and Jinyus. I would never use these but would use Khumo at a pinch. Having said that as long as I can afford Michelin or Dunlop they will be my first choice as you point out.

Kumho make great Motorsport tyres so I would use them on a road car. Going back to the original post the old Michelin ZX's etc would go to the moon and back and still have tread on them. They were quite revolutionary in their time for road holding compared to Dunlop Groundhogs etc.but the breakaway was instant especially in the wet! I still felt the same on Pilots no warning of breakaway. I think it was something to do with steel braced rather than rayon braced radials, plus the hard rubber compound of course. A friend of mine has raced a Triumph TR5 for years and years and uses the traditional Dunlop CR65 cross ply tyres. Low ultimate grip but plenty of breakaway warning and great handling. He says the youngsters he competes against turn up with their modern rubber and fly past him but ultimately end up in the gravel due to instant breakaway.
I found that from progressing from a 4/4 in my youth, forgiving, great handling, drifting etc. to my plus 8, my then dream car, an unforgiving point n squirt car. Nothing to do with the tyres maybe? I still have fond memories of that 1969 4/4, just wish it had more power. 2 litre Zetec on throttle bodies the ultimate maybe? But will probably have to make do with the V8 cruiser for now......
