Thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to offer assistance.I went back to the car late in the evening and it started, Just tried it again this am and OK again.Great but how infuriating because I have no idea what the fault is. However ,going for MOT in a couple of hours so this could be interesting.

...just an idea: there is an "antenna" surrounding the lock behind the cowl fairing that is suposed to communicate with the transponder in the ignition key. Sometimes thes "sit" a bit derranged.... In most cases it did help to fix them (with some "neoprene"  ) around the lock just close to the fairing. Hope that helps?!

Would the engine turn over if it was the immobiliser?

On my +4 where you needed to press the button on a remote to switch off the immobilizer the engine wouldn't turn over.

With the Ford PATS system if there is no communication to the key fob the engine won’t turn over and the immobiliser led will be flashing rapidly.

Do you hear the fuel pump energise when you turn the ignition on? (I assume a 2004 Roadster produces similar clicking and whirring on turning on the ignition as a Plus 4) When it wouldn't start did you hear the fuel pump energise?

On my +4 where you needed to press the button on a remote to switch off the immobilizer the engine wouldn't turn over. Interesting. On my '97 +4 it would turn over. It would even start, then die!

Graham the ECU kept dying on mine maybe I had a different version.
