1.Open your pot of grease. There should be a plastic or metal disc with a hole in the centre, about 30mm across. If you haven't got a pot of grease like this, go and buy one. Castrol MS3 is a good choice for kingpins.

2. twist the handle on the bottom of the greasegun through 90 degrees, it will come away from the barrel and be held by a length of chain. Make sure the chain is hooked into one of the little slots to stop the piston coming out of the barrel in the next step.


3. Unscrew the top part of your greasegun, the bit with the nozzle and trigger on it. You are now holding the barrel with the piston in it.

4. Invert the barrel over the hole in the plate. Hold the barrel in one hand and the handle on the chain in the other.

Push firmly dwon on the barrel, pressing the circular plate down into the grease. This will force grease up through the hole into the barrel of the grease gun.

At the same time, pull smoothly on the handle , pulling the chain and the piston back up into the barrel, allowin the grease to fill the void without leaving air pockets.

5. When the piston is fully retracted, hook the chain into a slot again to stop the piston coming out and squirting the grease everywhere.

7. Release the chain to place the grease under compression

8. Undo the bleed valve at the rear of the gun to let any air out

9. Pump the trigger to get the grease flowing out of the nozzle. There's another bleed valve on the top that you can use to release air above the pump

10. Grease your kingpins with the chain loose, but ALWAYS make sure you pull the chain fully back and hook it into the slot when you finish. Otherwise the gun will burst its seals and leak while it's in storage.

I sourced the same grease as my Morgan garage is using (Castrol High Temperature Grease) which I only could get in a cartridge. Will look for a compatible alternative now. To have the grease in a pot seems to be the key.

Much prefer a lever action cartridge gun myself, less faffing about loading it. Just unscrew the barrel drop in a new cartridge and off you go.

I have two greaseguns.
A smaller trigger type and a pneumatic one.
I tend to use the pneumatic as it allows one handed use easier. Other hand holds a prybar to raise the bronze plate to allow grease to get under it to ease steering effort. (A tip from Phil at Allon White)
The non cartridge filling is what I do from the tin with the plastic disc.

Hamwich, thats a good and obvious tip re pulling the chain back when you've finished greasing. Something I've never done though in 53 years of ownership of my Wanner, will do in future....future??????

By the way, i am impressed withe remote greasing kit that fitted, although i still jack the car up when greasing
