I've noticed this with the trip odometer, but I'm going to see if I see the issue with the total mileage as well. I started paying attention about a week ago because something struck me odd after filling up with gas and how far the trip seemed from the gas station vs. how far the trip odometer said.

I've now seen two instances of this. The trip odometer jumped from the 90s to the 70s, then back to the 90s all within one trip. Made me think that perhaps the LCD was going bad, but I have never seen an invalid number.

This morning the trip odometer jumped from 90s down to 50s. That's not a part of the lcd number character refusing to turn on, the five has the bottom line that the 9 doesn't. It's displaying the completely wrong number.

Wouldn't be a problem, but with my gas % swinging up and down by 40 points(I feel like it was only 10 percentage point fluctuation on corners when new) I rely on the trip odometer to know when to fill up. I've got an upcoming dealer appointment, just wanted to know if anyone noticed anything like this.

I assumed the fuel gauge was a biased random number generator, but the odometer and trip meter and clock and voltage display have always worked fine for me. Assuming you are not confusing odometer for fuel gauge? smile

Ha. No, the odometer is what I'm using to know when to fill up with gas though...

I normally just reset the trip odometer. I may try writing down total miles and going by that if the trip miles is inaccurate.

I've managed to reproduce it in a video. Normally it would jump values while driving, but I parked it with what I knew to be the wrong value.

Does anyone know if the trip odometer value is stored on the ecu, or would the problem lie in the gauge?

Nick thanks for sharing - So am I hearing this right - you're telling me it's got a trip meter 😱 - Therefor no more sums to do using the odo to calculate fuel/miles remaining

Here's something - Add all the numbers together then divide by the number you just thought of and that'll give you the minutes of accurate reading time provided by the random number generator.

Alternatively use the numbers in the local lottery - see if that works 😜

I remember at last years MOT I couldn't get it to display mileage either then it got better & worked again. Stress related sickness poor thing

That's similar voodoo to what I do now. If the gas percent reads zero, and it feels in my butt like I've gone 100 miles, and I'm lonely and want to talk to a rando at a gas pump, then I fill up.

NickValentine, did you ever get resolution to your trip meter issue? I have a 2016 M3W that is adding mileage to the trip and odometer when parked. As with you, the combination of the useless fuel gauge and now inaccurate mileage indicators is driving me crazy. Any thoughts are welcome. Bob

Wondering if there is an aftermarket gauge and sender we can install to eliminate the guess work. The gas gauge is a total waste of weight in the car. I use the trip meter and when I fuel up, I take my time so the gas will balance between tanks.

Fuel gauge, yes. Not sure Bout odometer unless you use a gps unit that records trip miles and times.

I've got a GPS Speedo / Odometer on order will advise how that works. I am also going to check the Protune reported mileage v gauge just to see if it is more true. The last 48 hours it added 26 miles while sitting quietly in the garage.
