I recently bought a 4/4 with the cross flow 1600 engine at Barons and as part of a general check over took out the thermostat, flushed the radiator and heater matrixes and then tried to back flush the engine and even with 3 bar of pressure nothing moved in either direction. Heater circuit was looped through. The water pump pulley moves easily so at a bit of a loss.
Anyone have any thoughts? It has been sitting for 20 odd years so I was expecting to to be a bit silted up.

I know little about 1600cc Ford engines, but how about removing the thermostat, reconnecting the thermostat housing and trying again?

Take the water pump off for a visual check. Not unknown for the impellor shaft to shear which gives the impression that the water pump is free when its not!
With it not being used for 20 years, I'd pull the engine out and give its a good going over. Change the core plugs as well.

If you remove the top and bottom hose are you saying if you put water in to the engine where the top hose would connect then two things happen.
1) Only a litre or so of fluid goes in before it overflows back out where the top hose would be.
2) No fluid comes out where the bottom hose should be connected.

Thanks for all the replies.
I took the thermostat out and connected up a hose to the bottom hose connection and a waste pipe to the top and then reversed it and even with 3 bar of pressure nothing came out. Good point Arwyn on the impeller. I think I will have to drag the whole thing out, which is a bind.

David. Lifting the engine is soooooo easy on the X/flow. Minutes with practise as I know from experience!

Sorry about the picture, I'll have to try and get to grips with posting images.
Virtually the whole of the water way was clogged with white crystalline deposits and the impeller was very corroded.

Took the engine out of my 4/4, replaced the clutch assembly and put the engine back in in just over 2 hours!
