Just to clarify Goodwood a little for you... there are two major events.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is normally at the end of June and is a hill climb. So cars go past one at a time. A huge event. It is mostly modern cars, including Formula One

The Goodwood Revival is in September and celebrates cars (and fashion) from pre 1966. It runs on the motor circuit and is a series of races - so you get to see all sorts of pre '66 cars at full race speed. Most who attend dress up in smart attire.

As above, Oxford is worth seeing as are some of the villages in the Cotswolds.

If you need a hand purchasing tickets for Goodwood, do ask.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is on at the moment (I have been there today). If you want a sense of it there is a live stream on YouTube: Goodwood Road & Racing Channel.

I'd agree with previous comments that if you chose one it should be the Revival. Be aware tickets sell quickly (Saturday for this year sold out in April). Accommodation in the area also gets booked a long way ahead (I'm told).

So I do rather think it depends on the interests of the folk coming over. Lot's of good suggestions already made, but I think London has to be a must-do doesn't it?

I can only assume you are going to Cardiff for family reasons? It's perfectly nice (the bay area has been transformed but it seems to me like all the usual chain restaurants) but I would not think in the top 50 things places to go in the UK.

I know this has been South centric based on your trip to Malvern, but I would add York as worthy of a trip, particularly to see the railway museum. Someone has mentioned Duxford (a favourite of mine) but if you are around the West Midlands anyway, the RAF museum at Cosford is superb.

I rather like Birmingham too these days but I have rose tinted specs for the place.

And if you are adventurous, the Lake District, Edinburgh, Scottish Highlands are all well worth the trip.

I suggest 2 months rather than weeks :-)

BTW how is Detroit these days? I spent 6 months there in 2004 working at GM down in the Ren Centre - but we have seen very sad pictures of it in a sorry state of late...

London is ok if you're a towny, but there are much better and less crowded places. York is high on the must do list.......

As a visiting kiwi who has just done my first day of Goodwood fos , I would say either event is fantastic, the variety of machinery is wonderful and a few kiwi names here too, Mclaren, mad Mike the drifter, who despite me not getting drifting was entertaining the crowd royally with his four rotor twin turbo 1000 plus horsepower mx5 ! And even one of the red arrows hail from our little South Pacific rock.

I took in the first day (Friday) of the Goodwood Revival last year, which was largely practice sessions for the remaining two days. We got to see all the cars that would race over the weekend. Practice sessions were 'no holds barred' and I cannot describe the thrill of seeing E Types and DB4s being driven flat out and in anger. Also enjoyable was the Austin A35 practice. A tribute to the late, great Sir Jack Brabham saw many of the cars that bore his name lapping the circuit.

Courtesy of my son, who works in London, we had tickets that took us everywhere except Lord March's tent. We accessed the paddock, the roof above the pits - where we spent most time during racing (in preference to the grandstands) and the vintage aircraft. The message from that is to make sure you can access as much as your budget will permit. Although we didn't spend much time in the grandstands, if we had attended the following day, when it poured with rain, the stands would have been welcome.

Couldn't recommend the Revival more highly and although we didn't dress up we were obliged to wear jacket collar & tie to enter many areas. Was amused to come across a guy wearing a (GM) Holden anorak above pit lane. The dress code does help add to the atmosphere.

We stayed in an Airbnb place in Worthing and left early (630am) to get into the good car park (car park 'M' I think) early. That car park was a motor show in itself and my hired Citroen looked very naff in that elevated company.

Food and drink wasn't the usual bun fight common to any event with large crowds.

I would happily take time to go again.

Nearby we visited picturesque Bosham on Chichester Harbour, scene of much dinghy sailing from my youth. Also made a pilgrimage to my favourite pub, the Chequers at Steyning, near Shoreham. As a fan of Brideshead Revisited I took the opportunity to visit Castle Howard, about 30 minutes north of York. When hiring cars in London, I prefer to catch the train to say Gatwick, if I'm heading south or Heathrow for the west and hire a car at the airport. This saves the boring flog out of London. It's not such a big deal going west but the drive through London's southern suburbs is tedious. Similarly we took the train to York and hired a car there, leaving it at Edinburgh airport.
