Today is the first day of the rest of our lives! Yesterday I sold my shares in my company to one of my partners and retired , I would like to emphasise that it's early retirement (I'm 61) and SWMBO, who worked for the company as well, also retired I started at the company as a young lad only intending to stay for 6 months but I enjoyed it so much that I stayed a bit longer. 45 years later, and having helped build the company from 4 people to 63 and finished up as Managing Director, I've decided to call it a day. The fact that Marie has retired as well means that we can enjoy ourselves together and tick off as many items from our bucket list as we can before I reach my sell-by date We have things planned for 6 days of our first week so I can't see us getting bored. It does mean that we'll have time to attend more Morgan events do we hope to meet more of you more regularly We're going to the Hopmog day at Amberley living Museum on Wednesday, we'll be at MOG 17 of course and have put our names down for Le Mans Classic next year. We just have to careful and make sure that having fun doesn't become a full time job

Good for you. I am now at 60 on a 3 day week. The boss retires in Sept/ Oct (at 21 again).
If we ever sell the house then I'll stop.

Congratulations!
I sold my business at the end of 2015 and fully retired at end-2016.
I'm now 67. Fitter and leaner than I have been for years. Absolutely no regrets about stopping work.
Beware! It is hard to fit everything into the time available. Now I wonder how I managed to do anything outside work.

Today is the first day of the rest of our lives......... We just have to careful and make sure that having fun doesn't become a full time job Congratulations.... BUT from the experience of friends it is a serious risk. My friend from school, we can call him Colin, was forced to retire at 55 from a major blue chip plc and with a defined benefit pension plus a lot of shares. He is now working harder than ever... 1. Chair of the local parish council, 2. Runs a major global professional standards body in the Chemical industry, travels the world, with his wife 3 Heavily involved with the local Arts festival...said wife is a painter 4. Photographer for a local amateur dramatic group. 5. Tours France and Switzerland each year, including skiing.. Why? because people who can run a business are essential to the proper running of many voluntary organisations. We talked about this last night: he needs the mental challenges. I remain employed for the same reason. If you are a "Type A" person and have had a working life where thinking and planning and scheming were everyday part of life then you may need to find a way to keep the grey matter ticking over... For me being paid to do so is better than retiring and not being paid!

I have a friend in Melbourne called Peter Bellenger. He worked with me in Unilever but also ran the Melbourne Open every year being the umpire who famously kicked McEnroe off the court in Wimbledon.
He retired at 60 and is very happy now in his late seventies.
Each to his own I guess

Thanks Peter, Retiring at 61 was entirely my decision and not enforced, if it wasn't my choice I may have felt less positive about it. I know that I definitely wasn't ready at 55. I have been working 4 days a week for the last 9 months and actively passing my duties on to other people, so now I've kind of made myself superfluous I have said that if I get bored I'd look at doing some work for charities but was warned that I may find myself taking on as much as I was doing in my own business. That's not what I want to do at all so I'll have to be careful of that. My elder sister retired at 60 with the intention of getting a 2 or 3 days a week job, but 5 years down the road she never has, because she hasn't got the time! Only time will tell for me of course.
