Not a small amount of money, but I would do it. That and a quieter sprocket, possibly.
Right now fitting a new cush drive, as the original, nippled one, disintegrated.
Trevor, who did the lapping?
M3W, now!!!

Why isn't it done at original manufacture? The bevel boxes will be built to the lowest possible price and that will not allow lapping of the gears.

Back in February 2016 G56 posted this picture on Facebook with a comment "This is the disappointingly healthy looking insides of a noisy bevel box. 10 points, redeemable nowhere, to the person who guesses the cause of the problem correctly!". I recently came across the post, and upon zooming in, was surprised to see the clear indication of a poorly adjusted gear set. The wear marks on the ring gear are right at the heel - to the extreme. A classic "HEEL CONTACT PATTERN" is concentrated off the heel end of the drive gear tooth. The solution is to move the ring gear closer to the pinion (decrease backlash) while maintaining minimum backlash. Here is the zoomed-in image: I'm curious if any other BBs have been disassembled to look at the developed wear pattern. And no, G56 didn't respond to the post with any updated information...

Very interesting truck in.
As a non engineer would that not imply that the meshing is not correct?
When it should be?

When it should be? Yes and yes. Any shop manual on how to set up gears in a differential tells you how to read and adjust engagement and lash based on the gear engagement pattern. I just went and pulled my '65 Chevrolet Corvair shop manual, and scanned these two guides on gear wear:

Is there any description available on how to remove the bevel box? Check G56's FaceBook posts, here is a link to their 40-sec video, more humorous than helpful: Garage56 - fitting a bevel box

Perhaps - there is also the possibility that this is not even the real issue... It would be great for someone who has opened one up to weigh-in on this, or if someone could poke G56 to see what they have ruled-out or found. I posted a reply or two recently to their page.
