I just thought that MMC would use stainless bolts and washers where exposed to the elements... frown

Now that I've posted this picture and looked closer, it looks like the washer may be chromed steel and it's rusting.

I don't know about chromed steel but I have detected that the stainless (cough cough) varies in quality. Much of this stuff is coming from India and China and the quality is all over the place! It's cheap and pervasive. The Allen head bolts on the S&S holding the valve covers will rust as water pools there.

"Stainless" is a misnomer. It is corrosion resistant at best.

The S&S Allen bolts are chromed steel, not stainless. It was a bit of a surprise to me but does rather explain the rusting.

It does make a sort of sense as stainless steel is much softer that hardened steel used for engine parts. Of course using impact wrenches will do amazing things to the chrome plating! Or any other tool where a torque wrench is called for.

I too was dissapointed S & S used chromed fixings although the US bike market seems to love it. I would have no qualms swapping them out for stainless on external engine covers and the like though, just haven't got around to it yet.

In my Moto Guzzi spares days we offered stainless bolt kits for almost all external fittings, including engine mount bolts - never had a failure.
