The most alluring I've seen was an oily rag 912 being used as a daily driver in Sheffield. It's rubber mat simplicity was charming.

They have great lines the early one's - if you feel the need go for it but be prepared for a lot higher running costs. Join the Porsche club and get it thoroughly inspected before you dive in . There is a lot of Porsche knowledge on this forum which has been revealed in the past. Deano and Heinz for starters.

I have a particular car in mind 4 miles from me ,private sale , been off the road a while. Well within my budget, but my car will have to go......decisions decisions. Just got a little bit bored with my moggy and I rarely drive it What year/model is it? Each model has certain issues to watch out for, as Richard says get it inspected, check its pedigree and make sure you know whether it needs work and what it will cost. For example an 80's engine rebuild done by a Porsche specialist could set you back £8-10k. The well known oil leak on the line feed at the top rear of the engine is engine out and only a couple of pounds oil seal. Not hard to take the engine out on an air cooled one just 4 bolts after disconnecting the heat exchangers etc. But if if rusted up can result in new ones being needed and this can escalate the costs from say £700-800 to double. So best to get it checked out.

As a few have hinted, the 911 is typically a very reliable car if its been looked after. Service history with a porsche garage adds value and its worth paying for it. A cheaper purchase price might seam attractive but a more expensive initial purchase might end up the cheaper option in the long term.

I'm using my air cooled 911 Targa 4 as a daily driver. Was off on holiday to Devon in it a couple of weeks ago,1000 miles in the week and never missed a beat.
Being a 964 it's the last of the original shape and I find it easier to drive than the earlier SC I had.
They're amazingly practical cars with a surprising amount of luggage space.
Just like Morgans they're not to everyone's taste, but I don't see where the comment that they lack character comes from. I would have thought that the opposite is the case.
They're very different from almost every other car and the air cooled engine is truly impressive.

Somebody stop me, I really fancy an old Porsche 911 ( I've had one before) remind me why I shouldn't sell my morgan Because the price of old 911s ie the 993 are top of a bubble level, way more than the car is worth on any rational basis. And they rot.

There are a lot of bad ones out there. As someone else said, get it properly checked...

Bearing all the foregoing in mind Steve,I think it is an itch that has to be scratched, and until you do that you won't know. You can always get another Mog in the future, and a different model too.
I say go for it.
