Why do they take so long? You can download terrifically big files in the blink of an eye yet these are so bloody long winded.

Got a new Garmin for the wife yesterday and did the initial download this morning @ 1h 50 mins. Then decided to update mine which I only did a few months ago, 2hrs 12 minutes.

I wonder why this is the case?

Which Garmin did you buy? By coincidence I've just bought a Garmin DriveSmart 50 for my Morgan. I'm still deciding where best to mount it.

And yes, they take forever to download/update.

I bought a new Europewide Garmin last year and it is a shame that you can't be selective in the countries you choose to update.
Because the file size for each country is very large.

(The chances of me wanting to go by car to Macedonia, are somewhat remote).

However, other than taking about 1 hour 40 to update, it is a super bit of kit and cost me about £80 in Halfords Sale.

With the wooden dash layout on my 4/4; it mounts (on its suction mount) between the right hand side of the glove box and the auxiliary instruments.

I have the older Nuvi 52lm and I bought a Nuvi 2529 LMT'D for the wife yesterday.

The Nuvi range is now being phased out in favour of the "Drive" range so got a great deal yesterday at Halfords on this one. It's good because it also has the Bluetooth hands free phone feature with it and live traffic reports. I thought it may be a gimmick but we've just tried it and it's the equal of the one fitted in my BMW's Idrive, so a result there for the money.

As I posted though, just curious to learn why these downloads take so long nowadays with fast broadband.

Kenny

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 58LMT from Aldi on Wednesday £89.99 following advice from a friend (always had Tom-Tom) and love it. Live traffic, lifetime maps and traffic, speed camera's etc.

Did a full software download and remap update. In about 45 min so I guess a lot depends on Internet connection and time of day. I managed to do mine before the kids got home from school! Virgin Media Fibre cable.

Slowly getting used to it after years with Tom-Tom but it's all very logical.

That's a super deal you got Colin. As an aside. how does the live traffic updates work? Is it a voice that speaks?

Did your's have the bluetooth phone gizmo, as I say it works incredibly well for the money paid.

I think the EU map size is 3GB, so it's not massive. Maybe transfer to the device is slow?

Is live traffic a function of the smartphone connected to the device?

Does this help?

A lot now also appears to use connected smartphones too.

Thanks guys. Yes, her phone has been asking for permission to "talk" to the Garmin. It is already connected via bluetooth so this must indeed be for the live traffic updates.

Thanks again.
