Here's a link to a petition asking for a bar to be added to the Falklands campaign medals of the 90 members of Royal Marines Naval Party 8901 and the crew of HMS Endurance, who bravely defended the Falklands and South Georgia against overwhelming odds when the Argentines invaded. Falklands Governor Rex Hunt recommended this at the time, but it wasn't granted. I suspect the fact that they killed over 100 Argentine soldiers in the defense may have been considered politically inconvenient at the time. It was hardly a Rorke's Drift performance. Do you get medals for surrendering? Its not a situation I would have liked to find myself in, but to me medals are for going above and beyond. I dont see that in this case. They did their job and gave up when instructed to do so.

I spent a few weeks at Grytviken about 17 years ago and you could still see the bullet holes in the buildings and the remnants of the helicopter they downed.

That certainly used to be the case as concerned medals for bravery. My Grandfather was recommended for the VC by his CO for his action off Zeebrugge, attacking 5 German destroyers with the one torpedo on his 40 ft torpedo boat (mentioned in previous posts) but it was turned down by the Admiralty as he was captured after being sunk. In the case of this petition, the request is for a bar to their campaign medals.

Just signed. I was in the Falklands last year and was rather humbled by the gratitude of the Islanders for the sacrifices made in their liberation.
