There I go again, the old 'ASS of U & ME' syndrome.

Your right about retired, Easter and I used to be in Management so it was 'Spreadsheets' for breakfast. You've not seen the useless stuff jamming up my laptop.

However, I am distraught now. All those years of false allowances for 10% more miles than covered (ie Grahams little mileage book) and excess tax I must have paid for those overstated 'benefits'.

Ah but if & when I sell a car I should now be allowed to 'clock it' (dock it) by 10% now.

Don't fret Frank, all is not lost, the fuel companies are legally allowed a 3% tolerance on fuel dispensed, it will come as no surprise that the pumps deliver less than you've paid for.

And in some cases, considerably less!
As happened to my Dad once at a motorway services - and to everyone else filling up around that time... However, things do go wrong!

Now, back to mileometers - they are more likely to be reasonably accurate - just because a speedometer reading is high does not mean the mileage reading is similarly affected...

my 1.6 cvh runs 36mpg reliably (based on the odometer) when running at the legal limit on motorways (+/- 10% speedo error!). Although when making more sedate progress touring in france (4 up with luggage) i saw 45 mpg on one fillup

I consistently get 28mpg (+/- 10% or 3%) and on the run up to Buxton, fully loaded, achieved 32mpg! - mostly at less than 70mph in the rain.

With all those cylinders to feed, what am I doing wrong?

With respect to speedo accuracy, I agree with Graham. Having just done Lands End to John O'Groats with Keith Alcock in his 1993 +4 (which was at Buxton on both days) we checked the speedo on the way down to Cornwall and it was over reading by almost 10% as against the satnav. However the distances measured on the mileometer were pretty accurate to the satnav and to the printed routemaps that we used for LEJoG (didn't use the satnav for the run itself!).

So far as fuel consumption is concerned, Keith has got the log that we kept, but I 'm sure we did over 450 miles on a tank, which means at least 37.5 mpg depending on how close we were to empty! (I think that tank capacity is 55l). We're planning to analyse the log next week.

Total journey without motorways and calling in at the factory and at Kevin Vernons was 928 miles, and the total journey time including stops was 30 hours.
