Dumb question - what form are the MTW bevel gears? Straight, Spiral, or Hypoid?

They are Hypoid Tim.
Following this thread /issue with interest - I keep coming back to a key question.
Where are Quaife in all this??
I guess we do not know as they will not speak or communicate with any M3W owners etc only MMC direct.
I tried different BB oils in my 2012 car, when i had it - made no difference at all!

The story was that Quaife delivered the contracted specification.
The only experience I have with diff was that I renewed the four thrust washers in my MGB diff. In that, the pinion setting was crucial to avoid whining and used a one use only collapsible spacer under the pinion nut. Setting up from scratch needed special tools.

My understanding as of about 18 months ago was that Morgan were supplying failed boxes to Quaiff for refurbishment. At that time they started asked Quaiff for fault diagnosis of these failed boxes , presumably to understand the issues. Prior to that no sense of understanding issues with faulty boxes was undertaken. No update since which I think says everything.

Truck diffs being a classic example allowing input shaft to be lower than driveshafts. Photo's suggest they are spiral helical with input and output axes on the same plane.

I cannot let this go. This noisy bevel box is unacceptable to me.
I visited the very best differential shop located in our large metropolitan area with the M3W. It is a small shop with a big following. He services OEM along with aftermarket units for 4 Wheel Drive and the Off Road Racing crowd. I have been doing business with him for many years and he has a long list of satisfied customers. He is an excellent technician.
The bad news- He wouldn't touch the bevel box. The good news is that he was very familiar with Quaife and spoke highly of their aftermarket and specialized units.
Next stop was Quaife. The website was very encouraging. Under Customer Service Technical Support was the following-
Quaife's technicians provide a comprehensive rebuild service for all our product range to ensure that your Quaife component is performing at peak condition season after season. Please email info@quaife.co.uk for an individual quotation
I emailed them with a comprehensive explanation of the issue along with a request for an estimate of their price to service the unit. This is the reply-
This must go to Morgan its not something we can do direct.
Kind regards Dave King Technical Sales Team Leader
I am beginning to see an opportunity for a ambitious person with some experience in this field to develop a fix for these units. I would like to hear from such a person! Also my request for more information from Trevor V and his reference to 3 Point Classic in Brisbane have been futile. )-:

Hi With regard to Three Point Classics in Brisbane, I have been in contact with them and will be sending the bevel gears to them next week.Providing I can get the bearings off!
They have done two m3w bevels. One with 100% success in noise reduction and the other approx 60% noise reduction.
The process used is old fashioned lapping where the gears are correctly aligned and run with abrasive compound to bed the two gears together . This creates a smoother surface and a kind of matched set. If nothing else reduces friction and runs cooler a tad. Better for the oil.
Hope to send next week so will be able to report back.
Since we are in NZ they are relatively close being in Brisbane. The gears are quite weighty!
Originally was going to send complete box as they disassemble and rebuild, but weight put me off. Have decided to DIY which will interesting as I am more of a muchanic!
I did see if could be done in NZ but no lapping machines left in this country. Must be a facility in USA somewhere

Been like this for 4 years from personal experience , probably longer. After a few years of protest i have come to accept it is what it is. I will let you decide what that is .....

I've just got Millers in the BB so we'll see if this has a quieter signature now.
The original service schedule didn't call for BB oil changes which always surprised me - I've had four full drain & replenish since owning the car - anyone what's the latest schedule calls for?
In fact does anyone have a PDF copy?
