I did a 380 mile round trip today to a small diner in the middle of nowhere in northern Wisc. I normally wear earplugs, but at about 65mph I pulled out one plug, and no whining or screaming at all. This is with about 8000 miles on the M3W. It has finally gone quiet! I am convinced that the gears do eventually lap in, and quite down at some point. Ambient temp today about 82F. Mine is quiet at 65mph also, it is from 45-60mph that it really screams

I reckon somebody could make a good income manufacturing running-in rigs for these bevel boxes. Remove them from the car, mount them on the rig, spin them up to about 10,000rpm for a few days, ideally with a recirculating oil supply with filtering and cooling.

IMHO the NVH kit is a boat anchor.
Would it be a brave person to mix some carborundum lapping paste with the EP140 and run it for a few miles at different speeds then flush completely an re-fill with new oil as an experiment?
Might not do the bearings nay good though.

Might not do the bearings nay good though. I know people say the "wear in", but with lapping compound in the BB itself, you still have the bearings and seals that would have the same wear in as the gears. My belief on the specialty guys doing the lapping, they have fixtures that hold the individual gears outside the BB and then reset the backlash and gear depth when re-assembling the BB. They would also probably vary the depth and the centering of the pattern so as to have a smooth gear face slightly larger than the final setup face to face area. Even when they wear in naturally, my guess is that the backlash will become slightly more due to the slight wearing in of the gear surface. I think it would be best left to a professional to do the lapping.

IF I were to lap the gears with compound, I would do it right in the box. Then I would plan on replacing all the bearings and seals and start fresh.

But as the gears polish in and there's no means to increase the depth or keep the gears under pressure during the process. You are correct though, afterwards just replace bearings and seals with a proper setup of pinion depth and backlash.

I wonder if the factory or G56 have found the answer?

The cost to remove the bevel box have the gears lapped and re install was $1,300.00. Once the bevel box gear set is lapped they are a matched set and there is very little noise from the bevel box. The 3 Wheeler is a joy to drive without the bevel box scream, at 110 klm per hour it was howling like a banshee, now just the wind and the engine song.
Good to find a fellow Ozzie and hear you are getting on top of the M3W issues. Are you coming to the Morgan Muster in October ? Enjoy the quiet ride...

What I find incredible is that 7 years after launch of The M3W this issue is still not factory fixed.
Lots of respect for those on here with the will and the skill to fix the BB themselves - well,at very least make it bearable.
