See images above. Temp gauge is normally halfway between 90 and 140 degrees. When stuck in traffic it goes closer to 140.

Seems consistent so I think its a gauge issue. Plenty of coolant - no leaks.

Any ideas?

Ive got a 300km drive in it tomorrow so that should really test it.

Thanks.

Having had temp issues on old classics a temperature measuring device that is pointed towards the offending area and trigger squeezed to get a reading is a very useful bit of kit , need to buy one really !

Is the fan cutting in?
If not, check the relay.

I would suspect the instruments voltage regulator as from what you have said the temperature is not that indicated on the gauge.

My (former) 1992 plus 4 used to sit at about 90 and then rise when in traffic until the fan cut in, then the temperature dropped until the fan stopped. Your Ford engine will clearly have different temperatures shown as the thermostat temperature will be different but I would expect similar behaviour with no air flow through the radiator.

I spent two years and a considerable amount of money chasing an overheating problem on my V6 Alfa Spider until I spent £12 on a infra red temperature gun and realised it was the gauge notworthy

Either go into Maplins or if you have time Ebay and search for IR thermometer.

Remove the temperature probe from the engine , with it still connected to the gauge and ignition on put it in a large container of boiling water to determine if the gauge is reading correctly, if it is . It then means you have an issue with the cooling system . Which I would start by checking the thermostat., as a short stop measure you could wire in a fan cut in bridging switch.

Following on from Smudgers post, have you changed the temperature sender? On the crossflow engined cars, the standard Ford sender is not compatible with the Smiths instruments and gives all sorts of readings!

It's CVH engine Arwyn, but I think the same applies re: temp sender?
