I am fortunate to have a 50 year old Ransomes Marquis cylinder lawn mower, which I started using when I was 12. It still has the same cutting cylinder but has had the bottom bar replaced once. The engine is a slow running BSA with Amal carburettor. Quite a beast to control as it has a centrifugal clutch and can run away quite quickly.
It has had regular servicing with the odd perished component replaced; so the old machine starts well, runs well, and just keeps going. This evening, it became a bit feeble but then recovered and carried on. When it was slowing down prior to being put to bed I noticed that the spark plug was loose!
Perhaps when I depart this mortal coil, I should be buried with my old lawnmower (q.v. a Viking long ship).
Tim

Tim I have a similar aged Hayter Hayterette , not as fancy as a your Ransome ! Like you I started using it at around 11or12 , it usually starts first pull . Last year I serviced it and was able to get all the parts I needed without problem . It is strangely satisfying everytime I use it .
Good luck with the four seater , looks lovely .
Hugh

Hugh Was that the John Deer that you were referring to? Now that's what I call a ride-on. Never mind my single seat Hayter, with one like that I could interest the Memsahib in mowing the grass whilst I had a glass or two of red whilst supervising.
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

I had huge issues with replacing an elderly Mountfield a couple of years ago... both new Mountfield replacements blew up. The supplier told me it was probably because it was a new model and they assemble upside down which the engines don't like... I was fully refunded and decided to go for a Honda. Whilst I don't have stripes any more, I suspect the Honda will last forever - it just seems so much better built than the modern Mountfield. My Hayter non ride-on was stolen by 'travellers' who broke into one of the outbuildings.
