I have a 1882 4/4 with a CVH engine and was considering trying to add another gear and up the final drive ratio. Just wondering if anyone has already done it. There seems to be lots of info for Kent engines but not CVH's

1882? Very early one then!

It should be straight forward, in common with the crossflow 5sp conversion, you will need a 5sp propshaft as the Type 9 box is slightly longer. I understand at least one Morgan spare specialist stocks them or a propshaft specialist can convert your existing one if you can find a Type 9 front.

With the gearbox being slightly longer you will have to move the inverted U bracket back. Its simple and straightforward, just a matter of redrilling some bolt holes.

Clutch operating mechanism, I've no idea on!

Hope this helps

Thanks Arwyn

I think it's a prototype made by H F S's father probably originally horse drawn!🤠

Not sure about clutch issues. I used the internal hydraulic clutch slave on two Morgans. The ZETEC/T-9 on My '61 DHC and the Rover/T-5 on My +8 Bitsa.

I think the '82 CVH cars were using a cable clutch. Convert it to an internal hydraulic slave as Button has done. You probably want a different bellhousing for that. Burton's has them for a decent price.

As mentioned above, it ought to be a fairly straightforward conversion - CVH cars like mine, a little later than yours, had the Ford type 9 gearbox as standard, so all the bits should be readily available from the usual suspects.

Mine's still a cable clutch, though. Not that that worries me unduly - the one time the clutch cable broke while I was out on a run, I was able to putter along in 2nd gear and make it to a supermarket car park on the edge of town, from where I got a ride to a parts supplier who was able to find a Capri clutch cable of more or less the same dimensions, even in the 'wilds' of suburban Southern Ontario... a bit of judicious bodging with extra nuts and penny washers later, I was able to drive home.

If You can make it work easily, stay with the easy way. On a trip to the "Lost Coast" of Northern California I ran over some tree limbs. These limbs got jammed in the hydraulic lines of My internal clutch slave, cracking a fitting. I was able to make it back to Seattle, but had to pull the engine twice to fix it. I could not see the crack nor could I see what was going on because of the bell housing. There are downsides and upsides to this conversion.

I just did a 200 mile journey today in my 1987 4/4 5-speed CVH. Mainly single carriageway roads. Was in fifth gear almost the entire time. I can't imagine the noise etc if I had a four speed. Go for it!!

A complete guide and photos here:

http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/78408/Changing_Classes_and_Engine_al#Post78408

There is an example of a Kent and a CVH engined car with photos of the chassis differences etc. Just get your current prop shortened - this is easily done/obtained.

Hope this helps
