I had a similar fuel problem on my old 4/4. The pump failed due to c**p from the tank.
I flushed the tank, new pump with a filter to protect it, flushed the fuel pipes, new flexible pipes,new pre engine filter. Solved! The lack of tank to pump filter was the issue. The engine side filter protected the injectors.
Car was 20 years old when bought. Maybe a sensible procedure for older cars anyway?

Just wanted to say thankyou for the suggestions thus far. Coil packs have been ordered! Next will be MAF. Will report progress/success as I go...

Lachlan, Once the car cools down, does it run normally again, and does it have to go up a hill before it starts to play up?
The fix is usually the easy part, its the diagnosis that's hard.

Jumped the gun. Problem has arisen again, despite coil pack replacement. Ambient temp was 30deg C, and car temp was about 100(usual). Any more thoughts greatly appreciated?
Also, anyone know if there is a way to circumvent the original coil pack(as in, can I use a unit that i can move in the engine bay? )

I have an Ignition Only Computer and Weber DOCE carbs.
I recently purchased a NoDiz computer from the UK. Nothing worked. With the help of the NoDiz Technician I found the coil pack was faulty. GOOGLED "How to check a Zetec Coil Pack". I bought a device that looked like a spark plug (but was not). But it was designed to check the coil pack and the ignition wires. By attaching this "Giz Wiz" onto the coil pack I could see if it sparks or not. Then I connected the "GizWiz" to the spark plug end of the ignition wire and checked that. Turns out one of the Ignition wires was faulty. The "Giz Wiz" was not expensive.
If You cannot find it, I will try to help.

If You cannot find it, I will try to help. As I travel, in My Morgans, to remote areas I carry spares so I can fix it if it fails. So I carry a spare NoDiz, Coil Pack, RPM sensor and Ignition Wires, also the "Giz Wiz". I have found local Mechanics no nothing about "points" nor Electronic Ignition. They can fix a Ford Tractor however.

I had poor running issues when a cvh efi car was warm. It was the old plug leads. New fitted and problem solved. Cheap fix with basic leads from eurocarparts...about £15 . Not sure of the price now though.
Remember.....leads deteriorate over time and the cvh Morgans are quite old.
A basic quality lead would be ok unless you prefer Magnecor at a higher cost.

Lachy I think it can be done. However the coil pack is grounded to the metal holder. I just removed the original coil pack and bolted the new one in its place. Like I said it turned out to be an ignition wire.

Hey Digimap, originally the problem showed up whilst traversing a hill, but this time it was just as it pulled up to a set of lights.
