I read that once again a US warship has collided with a Merchant vessel. Tempting though it is, I don't want to poke fun at the American Navy's capabilities, especially in view of the fact that sailors have sadly lost their lives.
But I'm intrigued to find out how this kind of thing is even possible these days? Aren't these ships bristling with all kinds of threat detection systems? Don't they have people looking?
I understand that a laden merchant ship would be very slow to turn or stop, but surely a warship would have loads of power and a greater degree of agility?

Busy shipping lanes. Failure of communications equipment Failure to acknowledge signals misunderstanding of international recognition.
A possible list of reasons but still difficult to understand !

The Straits where the collision occured is two miles wide in places. I think it is one of the busiest shipping lane in the area. I have never seen so many cargo ships at anchor off Singapore.

Certainly difficult for me to understand, My humble Honda has got warning systems that will tell me when I'm about to bump into something, I find it difficult to imagine than a mutli-billion dollar warship hasn't - and that even if they aren't working, they surely have chaps looking out the front to see what's going on?

Unlikely to happen with the RN, as the chances of finding a destroyer are so much less.
