Good afternoon all, I have visited a friend who has just obtained an early JAP engine, and was wondering if this came from a Morgan, rather than a motorcycle. Can anyone help? It seems all present and correct, box of rods flywheel etc. Here's some numbers.

As Neil says it could be . The reason for that is that is is water-cooled and most bike engines were air-cooled at that time.
Best check with the Morgan 3 Wheeler crowd for a more definitive answer.

I have found out, KT 980 cc. v-twin 50deg 85,7 x 85 mm. I guess the W is water cooled.
I have emailed The Morgan Three Wheeler Club too. Good idea Neill

The JAP KTW engines were used in Morgans from 1921 to 1931. See this website http://morgan3w.de/engines/engine.htm

Yes, almost certainly ex Morgan three wheeler for reasons set out above.
Also it has the correct magneto front cover as motorcycle fitment used a chain drive magneto as opposed to the bevel gear driven Morgan magneto.
Turning to the rear, no evidence of a chain mark on the crankcase, suggests that this was run with a cone clutch.
The letter after the oblique is significant as using the JAP dating code 'PNEUMATICS' where P indicates 1920, N indicates 1921, E indicates 1922, this engine can be dated to 1923.
