The solar eclipse arrived over Ohio at around 2:38 this afternoon. I decided to record the darkness with my M3W. So I got it out at about one pm in very bright and hot sunshine. At around two pm it started to slowly darken and it got eerily dark right on schedule at 2:38 for just a couple minutes. It didn't last long and quickly the sun returned. Here is a photo with the vintage fog lamps on that I installed earlier this year.

My wife and I rode down about 40 miles from our home yesterday to get on the meridian line of most totality of the eclipse. Where we stopped we got about 2 min 38 sec, only about 5 seconds short of the max.

This is of the start of the eclipse about half covered.

And here it's getting back to a normal sun, about half uncovered.



I was a little disappointed in the amount of total darkness, or lack there of. I was expecting a basement without a light on and I got darkness, but you could still see colors.

But it was a GREAT thing to witness in person.

I took these pictures with my little Panasonic Lumix bridge camera. I believe I was pushing the boundaries of the camera's capabilities though. I used a cardboard folded 49mm to 69mm slide over solar lens filter. I took video, but it's so slow in moving that it's almost worthless to watch.

We witnessed the total eclipse in South Devon in 1999, as we were on holiday at the time. Unfortunately it was quite thick cloud and so we didn't see much, but we did experience the twilight, the drop in temperature, and the total quiet.

The image above showing the corona is superb. When you consider the size of the sun, that's a huge belt of radiated heat and light.

I have an old rickety tripod and the adjustments do more of jerk rather than and smooth move. It took lots of time on each shot to keep it centered. At 93m miles away, that's a tiny thing to focus in on.

We could not have had better viewing weather. No clouds at all and it was around 97 degree with very high humidity. 80 and low humidity would have better, but I'll take no clouds over cooler weather.
