That could prove a serious problem for many. I'm so glad I stick with my old-fashioned "save up and buy outright" approach. My CCRV might be worth naff-all but at least I own it and can hang on to it until falls apart or I can't drive it any more.

My sentiments entirely I'll probably keep the diesel Fiesta until it stops, I have never been into the borrowing game I just feel more comfortable spending my money somehow.

I do feel a bit of sympathy for the keep up with the "Joneses I need it now brigade" but not too much.

Truth to tell, most don't buy a car to keep up with anyone. They need reliable transport and a few years of known expenditure. Those with young children to transport and get to work on time, every time choose the easy option as the chances are they will be in a better financial position at the end of any deal.

I wish these deals would have been around when my kids were young. We had years of doubling up with the kids at stupid hours because we both needed transport, and the 'second' form meant I was on two wheels throughout the freezing season or underneath old bangers every day off just keeping them running.

I've just got rid of my old lovebus which we kept for nine years meaning the value was pretty much nowt. The choice is either plonk some lump cash on a new job, which loses money hand over fist, or put that towards the Morgan (which HOPEFULLY doesn't..) and blag a newer car on a finance deal.

Hopefully, the big turbo nutter petrol six in Von Ryans Express won't shed pounds like the equivalent oil burner model..

Bottom line is, if it's looking dodgy ahead just drive in, give 'em the keys and walk away. It still costs, but so does depreciation on pretty much anything.

What's perhaps more concerning is the speed at which a change in guvmint policy is mentioned and values to plummet. 'Someone' still makes in all of this, and despite the bleating the car trade usually win.

Actually, if diesel engined cars are really losing value, it does present opportunities for those who wish to take advantage.
There are some large capacity diesel engines around, mostly in German cars, which may suddenly become very tempting, price wise.........

As long as the owner doesn't want to go into major cities or on the M1..

Only Euro 4 Diesels are considered "clean" by London after 23 October. Other cities will follow suite and there is talk of moving to Euro 5 as the cut off point.

Fortunately most of the older diesels will not be leased, nevertheless the pain will be felt by those least able to afford it.

I have a friend in the USA who has just had his 2016 Diesel Jetta taken back by VW. He got most of what he paid, the new price discounted by a rate per mile, plus a compensation payment of $7000. He told me that VW will be scrapping close to 1m cars in the USA, all the diesels presently on the road.

That sounds entirely reasonable..

We would never drive into a city. Train every time.

As for the M1 - having not to use it would probably be a blessing in disguise. Although if they ban old diesels from motorways, they will all clog up and pollute the alternative routes. Hardly sensible.
