I still cannot see how the government will recover the tax lost from petrol and diesel when everyone is 'forced' into electric. Must be billions of income they face to lose.
My initial thoughts were that carbon based fuel will become super cheap when it has to compete with electric - but my guess is that the powers that be will either hike the road fund licence on all diesel and petrol cars still being used and also add more tax onto the purchase price at the filling stations.
Then of course there will be some form of tax on batteries or charging to cover the losses at the pumps.
I will be well into my seventies by 2040 so will have little need for anything but the cheapest form of transport - perhaps a TUK TUK as mentioned by Peter in another thread ............ the electric one of course. Are you giving up life when you reach 70 then. I do more now than I have ever done - working for some prat no longer gets in the way.

Truth to tell, most don't buy a car to keep up with anyone. I wonder. I once had a rep who got realluy up tight about his new allocated company car - a sierra L I think it was. He begged for me to cancel his annual pay rise so he could have a GL and his reason was that his neighbours down south would see him as a failure because of the L. Must have pestered me half a dozen times about it.

It's OK there's plenty of cash under the bed.
More interesting is a newspaper article which suggests that VW are to scrap over a million newish cars in the USA. Surely this makes no sense whatsoever.

The interesting part to all this is that we believe we live in a democracy where the government reacts to the needs and requirements of the majority of the public. The truth being that once we get past an election they can do what they want based on any spurious theme that is believed to be a future vote winner.
I cannot recall any news item that stated the general public had agreed that electric cars would save the planet and we should abandon what we have now.
Granted you cannot halt progress but I am still not convinced that setting strict cut off deadlines resulting in huge wastage is the way to go - or that electric cars are as environmentally friendly as those pushing them to the forefront make out.
But how do you challenge it in our so called democracy??

They will follow the lead from our lot and slap a "Vehicle registration tax" on cars -- our lot charge between 24 and 35 percent onto the post VAT cost!!! Makes motoring a luxury - particularly the Morgan!!

Yes the Irish and many other countries have wicked car registration taxes. Our recent governments have also taken that as an excuse to start raising ours unless you run an electric pringles tube. In some ways we are well off for taxes if you look globally. On the other hand that means all changes are going to be for the worse and definitely feel that way !
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
