I am curious as to how the wheels could move in the arch. The chassis is made up from machine cut sheet and extrusions and will be accurate to fine tolerances as therefore will be the placing of oily bits. The same surely applies to the body panels. So how and where can the differences be? Does the overall length of the car vary because the distance between the front assemblies and the rear assemblies varies? Bolt the front on. Bolt the rear on, then measure the door gap and make to fit? If so, then that explains a lot.

In the final analysis, I suppose these issues are what you put up with in order to drive something totally different from anything else on the road. For the same money as an Aero you can have a brand new Porker which in every possible measure will be better. But it will fade into the background. I suppose a half way house would be what I did with the big red Fiat. Dynamically way better but with its own equivalent of the wheel arch issue

The wheels fit centred in the rear arches on mine.

A bit like Leica rangefinders: there are a lot of superior cameras in some ways but I'll take my Leica anyday.
I once kept a daily tally of the weather in Shropshire for two years and there were just thirty three days when it rained so hard that I either put up the roof or took the Polo.
Still have a Morgan.

I agree with Will.

Whilst I am openly critical of some of these niggles (polite word used) I have nothing but respect for what has been achieved. Its just that last 10% that drives me nuts sadly.

Its the high maintenance mistress car without a doubt. But it looks and feels so good you have to put up with it. The only way of keeping the balance is to put miles on it? The Coupe (2013) now has 30,000 on it whereas the poor S2 has only just reached 32,000, it needs more love.

In answer to Graham (Mogos question) there has been an extensive study of the the effect that a lightweight V8 with sidepipes (and some rattles and sump scrapes) has directly on the human spirit and a sample can be found here.

All the issues ( I still prefer the word problems ) are those which I found when driving one of the first dealer cars. The hood was, and IMHO, still is a pathetic effort.
It was this above all else that put me off buying an S5 and I don't mind a bit of rain, I do have a "C" Type after all !!

Long live the trad with its reasonably fast erection ( stop it!!)

Here for a good time not a long time!!

I loved the look of the S5 when I first saw it at Genoa. I knew it would not be for me with the V8 engine but when I saw the forward opening boot and other details I was simply astonished that anyone would think this was a good idea.

If you recall the original concept was that the closing of the boot would tension the hood, also the fuel filler was concealed. Naturally we all want to open the boot to fuel our cars, don't we?

The trouble is with the S3 that they got so locked into the concept that they refused to change the design to something practical. I was looking at a '60s Alfa Spider the other day. An easy-up type hood that drops out of sight when down. Obviously a decent hood design is not rocket science and there are plenty of examples to copy!

The hood on My Lancia Flavia is the epitome of easy up/easy down and disappears in a recess totally, just like the look on the S5. Very simple design.

I think they were too caught up in the target of 100% watertight. I don't believe it is possible without a power hood which can ensure a very compressed tight seal. Having said that, it is more watertight than previous offerings but in hindsight I'd rather the older roof design.

The cockpit cover I have for the old Aero's still works though on the S5 (not quite as secure due to door handle changes). I recommend getting one for all 5's!
