Just sorting out an electrical earth problem on an early Series 1. It appears to be where the battery lead meets the body then joins an earth lead to the engine. Has anyone changed this or improved this arrangement? Has anyone moved away from the brass battery posts as that seem so be another place for poor connections. Interestingly the poor earth appears to cause a myriad of the regular Series 1 problems namely ,clicking starter, stalling, cam sensor and maf error messages.

I have been noting posts involving the S1 Aero for a number of years and the requirement for a secure earth is frequently suggested but I have not heard of anyone improving or changing the existing connection. The brass battery posts on the Odyssey SP250 have not been mentioned as an issue. I take it that you are planning to make some changes, I would be interested to hear what you alter and if you notice an improvement.

Brass should make for very good connections - after all copper is what is used for all sorts of electrical work including most wiring.
That said any joint is a risk so I'd be inclined to wire the battery negative direct to the engine with no join.
For the rest of the connections, best clean up with emery paper and then remake the join using silicone grease to protect.
My understanding of canbus is limited but what I know of it suggests that bad connections would be recognised by the ecu as a failure of whatever component it is trying to use.
Take particular care with any copper to aluminium electrical connection. Make sure it is well protected from water and salt or you could risk bad corrosion of the ally.

Aero250, must admit I never had an issue with earthing on my S1 in the 9 years I had her. That said the car led a pampered life and was never exposed to a salty or high humidity environment so perhaps my experience not typical.
MAF failure yes, but then we had driven through a massive rainstorm and probably water got into the airbox.
Clicking starter also but always down to the starter. Incidentally, and you'll find it on another post off mine, and good friend in the UK who's had his S1 since new no longer suffers the dreaded click and garages his car in a dehumidified garage. Clearly the contacts are very sensitive to humidity levels.
Cheers
