Hi All,

I am wanting to fit an electric fan onto my 1954 flat rad, has anyone done this? which fan did you use? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so if it is a TR engined Plus 4, I don't think there is sufficient room to mount a puller fan inside between the engine and the radiator. I looked at my 51 Plus 4 Flat rad (I am looking to do the same.) (You may have more room than I, as the cars are never the same.) Obviously there is no space outside the rad for a puller fan, unless you want it to show.

The other issue is the whether you have gone to an alternator or not. I have a generator and with only some 2O or so amps, I am leery to add a fan, which will pull something like 10-15 amps. My experience is primarily with SPAL fans and they have a very low profile fan and their costlier ones are more efficient and therefore use fewer amps.

The other option is an electric water pump. I have seen that done on two 4/4 Series 1s. Again, they each have alternators.

If I had a Flat Rad I would install a belt driven fan that pulls more air. Flex-A-Lite make a plastic fan. By trimming the blades It can be made the right diameter. By cutting a hole in the center it can be fitted to the Morgan water pump pulley. So now You have a fan that will pull lots of air. It will also sound like a B50 taking off. By trimming the blades the noise can be cut down. But it will pull less air. So it is a balance between pulling enough air and noise. Morgan Spares in New York sells such a fan, but it is already trimmed (too much IMO). But you can get the idea and some hardware by buying one of these. Then go to the Flex-A-Lite dealer and buy a uncut blade. If there is a will there is a way.

Another idea I have used on My DHC is an electric fan with a shroud. Made by Flex-A-Lite. It is quite thin. They make a Universal Fan. By modifying the shroud I fitted it in back of the Rad. It might fit a Flat Rad, but if so it will be tight.

It would definitely have to be mounted behind the rad, and there is a fair bit of room, I'll have a look into the Flex-A-Lite.

I'm definitely leaning more to an electric fan as the car has always run hot and I do tend to drive it more on warmer days, but I'll admit I hadn't thought about adding an additional fan.

Please report back. As I said I am investigating this as well.
