Yes, I have bypassed the Inertia Switch

That's what I'm afraid of !
Phil - Yes, I take your point entirely, but I am now habitually jamming my foot against the side of the car to stop it moving - and the problem suddenly came on after many years with the car, so I'm pretty sure it's a fault.
