5 hour journey back to the east this morning from Malvern , held up by accident near Duxford , roof off all weekend !

Drove around Hay on Wye /Builth Wells/Brecon/Elan valley earlier in the week with other Mogs , fantastic roads and scenery !

I drove my Aero to Sywell Aerodrome yesterday. I was due to fly in a Spitfire (part of my 50th Birthday present). The weather was perfect so third time lucky. The first flight was cancelled due to bad weather and the second as the plane undercarriage failed on landing and so had to be repaired!!

Perfect weather, great drive, fantastic flight (I got to fly it a short while). As the Spitfire bumped across the grass heading for the run way to take off the pilot said to me "I hope you don't mind the bumpy ride"......I replied "I drive a Morgan.....I'm used to it!!".

I've thought to myself sometimes driving a Morgan might be a bit like flying a Spitfire.......the Spitfire was far smoother and easier to fly than the Morgan is to drive :-) (admittedly I only controlled the joy stick!).

Two British icons in one day......and great bank holiday weather.....a sublime day :-)

Cheers All.

How was the Spitfire to fly.....sensitive. I am no pilot so I simply took the joystick and tried to keep the nose on the horizon. Slight hand shudders would make the plane drift but easy enough to bring back with small movements.

Take Off is fantastic hearing that V12 Merlin crank up. We kept the cockpit cover open until we got to the end of the runway as it was very hot. On start up the cockpit filled with smoke and smells from that Merlin......Ahhhhh......pure nectar :-)

Landing was probably the smoothest landing I have ever experienced. The pilot who took me up was an ex Air Marshall in the RAF a very accomplished pilot (Cliff Spink). He has been flying Spitfires for the best part of 20 years and a fine host he was too. We navigated the Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and South Derbyshire countryside to locate my house following roads and landmarks. On the way back we did some rolls and a victory roll over the airfield before landing - just had to be done :-)

I will put a couple of photo's in the Forum photo gallery.

Cheers all

Rob
