Day 5
Now we know why Cantabria is so green. Rain started at midnight and continued throughout the morning. We left after breakfast and continued south on the Autopista Ruta de la Plata towards our next hotel spa at Caldas de la Luna. On the northern side of the mountain we climbed steadily in light rain and mist from sea level to 1229 metres (4,000 feet ASL) at which point we traversed a long tunel to break out in the barren rockscape and brilliant sunshine on the southern side of the mountains.

Once booked in we took a walk to the nearby village and then returned to use the spa facilities and enjoy a very relaxing massage. A brief rest was then followed by an excellent meal.

Batteries are no recharged for the next sprint to Chaves.

On the small road in to Caldas de la Luna

The view from our window along the stream.

Sunset on the mountains.

I will save you all the embarrassment of seeing me in the spa by neglecting to post the photo blush

Day 6
A fairly uneventful drive from Caldas de la Luna down out of the mountains and across the plains. Our car completed 60,000 kms (since new in 2012) somewhere near the halfway point. We are now at the Hotel Forte de São Francisco Chaves. Chaves is a border town that once had great military importance for Portugal. It was once a heavily fortified town with a tower and castle walls. Later it was fortified with two forts, one of which is now the Hotel Forte de São Francisco, and a large garrison.

I will try to get get some photos up tomorrow after we arrive in Caramulo.
