+1 Looks like our M3W's are acting like a guitar and the smallest sound which goes in, comes out loud. Nothing is expected as a modern car to sanitize all the noises and the system bevelbox / toothed belt does not promote silence,I just feel like I'm riding in a pre-war sports car.

I would add a QUAIFE gearbox to change gears faster.

I discussed the problem with a technically very smart friend, he suggested to replace the coupling of the driveshaft with a Rzeppa coupling. He think the very small variation in speed which you get from the normal cardan coupling could make the noise between the teeth inside the bevelbox. Hmmmmm....... it's out of the box thinking but ......  I Googled " Rzeppa" and there could be a truth in his idea.

... 3000rpm = 50 revs per sec. 1 rev = 1 firing of a cylinder. Would that not be 50 torque peaks per sec? Probably you meant many thousand times a minute  Signed Paul the Pedant

A nice 50hz howl at 3000 rpm when on a light load which would allow the cogs to vibrate against each other might sound familiar to some folk. My bevel box produces minimal noise (amongst the general cacophony at least) when under a heavy acceleration load or on the over run. Ergo, drive it like you stole it. No bevel box noise.

Hmmmmm....... it's out of the box thinking but ...... I Googled " Rzeppa" and there could be a truth in his idea. The angle, or lack of angle, is almost a straight line from tranny to BB. U-joints are timed on the drive shaft to cancel out the accel/decel on every revolution. My opinion would be this is probably not the cause.

Any update on how your rebuilt Bevel Gearbox is performing P964? You must have had a chance to put a few miles on it by now. The weather is colder here which means it must be warmer in New Zealand now, so is it quiet even when it has got up to temperature?
