Because they failed, spectacularly, to manage holiday planning.
A management system cockup, no excuses.

Obviously learning from the other Irish Airline CEO, put shareholders first, passengers second and staff last.

Job for you maybe ?

That's what I've heard through a pilot friend who works for Easy Jet

The cocking up the leave is partially correct but a bit of a smoke screen for pilots and senior airline staff jumping ship (plane) for better pay and conditions

They have been cancelling flights on the quiet for a few months now because of staff shortages apparently

I've heard similar from a friend (ex RAF) who now flies for Thompson.
Really easy solution to the issues Ryanair passengers regularly face - don't fly with them.

Talk in the industry among pilots is that Ryanair have lost over 200 pilots in recent months to competitors - Middle East airlines, Jet2, and Norwegian Airlines and a few others

Ryanair have been trying to cover these losses through increased hours on those pilots that remain but because leave is heavily regulated they are loosing weeks worth of hours rapidly

Market forces - they have been paying the lowest wages to self employed pilots and crews with no pensions to keep low operating costs and fares

They are training pilots so that they have to work so many years with them but as soon as that period is up, they are leaving

I don't fly anywhere these days, and never used RyanAir even when I did. Why? Poor service, inconvenient destinations, shoddy treatment of staff, and a business model driven by the pursuit of profit above all. All just to skimp on a few quid on tickets, a need which could be easily obviated by simply saving up a bit longer before buying the wretched things.

I don't mean to be too moralistic, But just how bad has a company got to be before people no longer wish to do business with them?

Totally agree

Any race to the bottom in terms of costs and fares catches up eventually

I have flown Ryanair a few times so has my family - they were spot on with my youngest son's severe disabilities and it's been absolutely fine but the true nature of an organisation only shows itself when problems arise and this I hope is a wake up call for all services that are underfunded and under resourced in the name of driving costs down and driving large profits

We just have to pay more for things so that people can be paid a decent wage with decent working conditions

Just been listening to Martin Lewis on BBC5 live

Apparently under EU law, if a flight is cancelled within 14 days of travel, the airline has to offer a refund or an alternative flight on the next available PLUS compensation which should be at least around £200

Knowing Ryanair's past history with compensation payouts - good luck with that

Passengers love to complain about them, but excluding US carriers, they are the worlds biggest airline by passenger numbers.

Supposed to be more customer focused after the £1 toilet fee debacle, such as ditching the mad scramble and returning to seat allocation, so this is a PR setback for them.

I thought that this was RyanAir and not QANTAS or BA discussion (all equally apply).

For good order I have not issue with looking after share holder interest (this is the CEO role), but they must also develop a sustainable business.

Tim,

I begin to believe that the culture of "Global Business" has evolved to the point where they see no other policy than to drive down costs by outsourcing everything possible.
They do this because they believe the public want everything as cheaply as possible (and I believe this is the case) and need to achieve the lowest cost/price, without damaging investor returns.

My own employer is a privately held global entity with 52,000 employees. It has outsources HR, Recruiting, IT support, Travel booking and Expense Management to third parties. The result is that employees can't talk to anyone, so they have to communicate with the providers through web portals and raising a "ticket".

The result is that highly paid specialists spend more and more time dealing with personal administration and not the proper job. This breeds frustration: we see a steady loss of good people. The closure of the final salary pay scheme hasn't helped, either. On top of that we have a recruitment freeze and travel restrictions.

So profitability is increased as wages and costs are kept down. Why do they need more profit? So they can buy another business and feed the monster.

I would, if I was 50, be looking for another job with a SME, not a massive global machine.

Back to Ryanair: they want to fly more and more tourists to more and more destinations, at the lowest possible price. the public want this.
Well, if the public want this sort of provider then they should stop whining about the consequences.

I have never flown any of the cheap airlines and, despite pressure from top management, I never will.
