A very nice colour but for me it has to be the narrow body cars not the Turbo wide body. I keep looking at cars that have no rear wing (whale tail) or have had them removed. I do like the smooth uncluttered look of the earlier cars but then I like originality and mine had a whale tail from new so it will stay on.

Doesn't seem two minutes since deciding to do it or not - pleased I went through with it.

Madness now might be selling it - been a great investment too.

I sold the RS6PE I had to John Holland and I have to say they were really good about it. I found them very easy to deal with and they took time to document the entire car and check it. It was a bit of a bind at the time but thinking about it they were good ensuring the next person got a solid car.

I don't get the prices of things like 964 and 930 cars at the moment. Unless they have been maintained perfectly they usually hide some serious costs. The market seems to have talked itself into a frenzy.

I would love a 964 Targa for the good lady wife as she had one when she was younger but the price now means selling at least one of the Mogs. Its a fine line. Which at some point I WILL lose. I guess I am fine with that but I am sad I did not do it 5 years ago when they were cheap and heading north !

In The Times today it says classic car prices have peaked. One of the reasons being that there are fewer "grease monkeys" to maintain them. Apparently youngsters today prefer to work on high tech. Look out for bargains as prices tumble!

I read this too. In my experience, most owners of valuable classic cars do not work on them themselves - in fact it would probably damage the value if they did. The history files, which are so important to maintain the value, should feature 'approved' or 'known' garages. I've owned some classics and I wouldn't what to do under the bonnet.

Values have gone a bit soft but it's nothing to do with home maintenance.

I think its a very complex market which is partly driven by speculators, especially when other forms of investment are so poor.
The true value, whatever that is, depends on the numbers of that car which are available, and the number of people with the ability to pay the asking price.
Borrowing money to buy a high value classic is risky unless you're at the top end - 250GTO for example.
What's odd is how cars such as the E Type, which is plentiful, have reached such ridiculous prices. Much the same can be said of the air cooled 911's. But I suppose within each group are the limited runs, and the rest get pulled up behind.

I wouldn't want a classic which I couldn't mess with, or take on a touring holiday, but that's just me.

I do most of the work myself on my 1930 Sunbeam. Its not easy to find anyone in reasonable distance who can do vintage stuff. I do send stuff away for fettling if beyond my capabilities or facilities. I had the starter motor & water pump sorted this year but nothing in the previous 5 years. I'm in a scheme to have new engine blocks cast & machined through STD Register.
