Recent Ford inline 4 cylinder motors do seem to be a bit water sensitive.
I had a Land Rover Evoque with the Ford 2.2L Turbo 4 cylinder motor. On more than one occasion the engine went into "Limp Mode": at the time the dealers had no idea why.
Long after I sold the thing, prompted by the Transport Safety people in the USA, JLR issued a fix.......
A plastic cover for the front upper part of the engine, so that rain couldn't get through the radiator grill, over the top of the radiator and on to the top of the motor, shorting out ignition electronics.
I'm delighted that the big BMW motor in Tarka has no such water sensitivity..it has its own issues that at least don't interrupt driving pleasure....

You've unknowingly answered a question for me 3 years on... Our Evoque (2.2d) would do the same after fording even shallow water (between wheel hub and top of wheel) - dealer repeatedly fixed/reset it, blaming "coil packs". Now, even I know that was a lie with a diesel engine. I wonder if they knew it was a flaw at the time?
