I dont think its the engine that people are having issues with, but the items between the transmission and the driving wheel. Yes the engine seems almost the best thing other than the cam gear problem, by far and away it's the transmission of the power and exhaust issues which as far as I read are still very "live" issues after several years of production. I don't believe this would have happened on Peter Morgan's watch he was a man of great integrity. Yes the engine is great and it defines the cars character. But if the car had happened with Peter Morgan at the helm....he would have undoubtedly opted for a smaller engine. The peak torque pulses (in region of 1150 ft/lbs I believe) are too great for the transmission's longevity. Someone must have known this early on in the concept stage surely John. I think a smaller engine would have been a better answer there is no way I would travel in an M3W at 100mph anywhere so surely a 600cc V would have been more than adequate.

It's a shame that Tony Divey wasn't treated with more respect by MMC.
Morgan could have been back into the 3 wheeler market years earlier, and with a lighter car with the Guzzi engine and transmission and saved themselves a load of aggro.

I quite agree he had an awful lot of experience and came up with a winning combination, I never heard the Triking being called under powered either. They look nice too with the Guzzi V up front. Engine options 900 - 1,200cc. Built price from £20K.

No there hasn't, Dan.
Centa rubbers are breaking down after many miles according to reports on here, and a couple of Bevel box seizures reported but I haven't read of anyone being stranded through a transmission failure.
I don't know who else has read Peter Dron's excellent book on the M3W, but a lot of facts are in there about the car. Much more than pure speculative whimsy, anyway.

Yes, One of your fellow countrymen was following his wife who was doing around 60mph as I recall when the back axle seized totally on her locking the back wheel up solid and she did very well to keep it on the road. He was an early adopter as I remember and may come forward with the full details.

Ah, ok. Hair splitting time, then. I took transmission on the American side as meaning gearbox. I did mention seized bevel box, but what the heck.

I don't believe this would have happened on Peter Morgan's watch he was a man of great integrity. Richard with respect that is a very subjective opinion and in my case not based on fact. My first Plus 8 was delivered as an Export Order and I dealt with Peter Morgan and Derek Day direct. My car was specced with a full alumium body at extra cost and the paint on half the car stripped off within 6-months of owning the car as the etch coat had not been applied to the full vehicle. After protracted negotiations with the afore mentioned individuals I paid for the car to be resprayed, allegedly at a reduced rate, but still a major expense on what should have been a warranty item. I went on to buy two more new Plus 8’s in 1984 and 1986, and sold all three at a small profit on the purchase price (those halcyon days!), but the quality of all three was really sub-standard even compared to other manufacturers at that time and PM was not really interested in customer complaints or genuine warranty issues. The worst car quality-wise that I have ever had from Morgan was my Series I Aero delivered in 2002, I still have a copy of the letter that I wrote to CM detailing a list of over 50-items that needed attention. Not too much interest then either, plus ça change - I have continued buying Morgan’s fully aware that they do not have the development budgets of say a Porsche or a Mazda (for their MX5), but I remain satisfied that I have been fairly treated by the company in more recent times and thus I continue to buy Morgan’s, including an early M3W!

Very fair comment Brian it does seem that the quality of the product has improved but the niggles remain, I guess it is the trade off for the uniqueness of a hand built car.
