Possibly in part due to diff ratios used but I have chased a lightly tuned 1800 4/4 owned by a friend and whilst I have more outright power there was very little difference in real world performance. I have to say I was quite surprised. There are certain members of TM who have also realised this when trying to keep up with Stanley.

I have to say I was quite surprised. I wonder if that was the eason why Ford added the restriction to the 1.8 throttle body. Perhaps it was just a marketing thing because the 1.8 and 2.0 products were just too close. PS - I think they both share a 3.73:1 diff ratio

I would say that the Mazda gearbox 5th is very high ...like an overdrive.
It's a sweet gearbox very smooth and positive. You could say quite excellent ...and be right!

I must say that I‘m not so sure if I have a 3.7 or a 3.9 final ratio at my 2014 4/4. All world says it should be a 3.7 but my former P4SS felt way longer using the same Mazda gearbox. The diff plate is not readable which could tell what it is) I rev about 6.500 rpm to reach 110 km in second gear. Using my sport manifold since two years in combination with the standard air box plus K&N pad inside (yes...it is overall better than my interim personal solution of different intake tubes) she felt really quick. Now three weeks ago I finally found a serious rolling road garage which did not „just“ took data out of a shelf but made an analysis of my engine and afterwards remapped it. The positive thing is that they had not to go to any limit. They saw that the engine was heavily restricted in terms of torque numbers. May be the reason is to protect the half shafts of the front wheel drive Focus/Fiestas. Now after the remap well, what should I say...see the figures at 98 Octane. They speak for themselves. And so the car acts now, with plenty of torque and power in comparison to the weight. Due to the lambda figures she was running at 0.85 and now she is at 0.9. which means the mix is still fat enough now but I use half a litre less of petrol for 100 km of way when not forcing her more than in the past. All in all a rise of almost 47 Nm is not too bad regarding a small 1.6 NA engine and it could not happen if the engine was „free“ before the mapping. (old is blue, new is red, lower lines are measured at the wheel, higher lines at the clutch, estimated I guess, one sheet shows max HP the other one max Nm).

That's a great result, Heinz! Looking at the way the torque curve climbs between 3500 and 4200 revs I bet the car is great fun to drive in 3rd gear.
On the subject of figuring out your gearing, nearly all 5-speed gearboxes give a drive ratio of 1:1 in 4th gear, so if you can get a steady reading of speed and rpm in 4th it's easy to calculate the diff ratio as you know the rolling circumference of your wheel.

Very nice Heinz. Interesting about the target lambda. Omex set their systems to a target lambda of 1 which I assume means that they run a little richer across the board. Actually they don't take the lambda reading into consideration above 4000 rpm anyway, at that point they go entirely by the fuel map.
