I see Roose Motorsport do a full silicone set for the 1.8 blacktop Zetec 4/4, around £250 when you include clips, carriage and VAT. I don’t particularly like bling, so would choose black, and that would also match the big black air inlet hose.

The car is now 12 years old, but low mileage - however I am probably going to have a new, bigger Aluminium rad fitted, so it would seem like a good idea to replace the existing (original) hoses.

My question is - what are the advantages and disadvantages? Preferably answers from experience, not from the advertising blurb! Also does anyone know what a full set of rubber hoses would cost?

Thanks, Nigel

Current trads have silicon but I'm not sure when that changed.

They are said to have a long life. My Roadster hoses still look good at twelve years and I suspect that they are silicon.

My 2002 car has blue silicone hoses. They are the "retro look" style with the spiral winding look not smooth and shiny.
I think they are originals and are in great condition after 15 yrs and 58k+ miles.

My 1998 plus 8 still has the original blue silicone hoses with 25k miles and appear to be in excellent condition.

Silicone hoses on our Plus 4 were from silicone hoses who know what they are talking about. (also product of the year award)

Ensure you fit stainless clips and they are bevelled at the edges to prevent hose damage see email below and web site

let us know how you get on

The price of the set is £155.82 incl VAT.
One point about the clips - you need to fit silicone hoses with clips with bevelled edges and no holes in the bands, to reduce the risk of cutting when you tighten the bands. Standard jubilee and wire clips are not suitable. The clips we provide are stainless steel bands with galvanised worms, on the recommendation of our first ever customer who is a professional car restorer . You should also be able to buy suitable clips at marine suppliers or auto accessory dealers. If you want the clips as well they are 21.70 incl VAT.

Carriage is £7.50 + VAT. I have quoted for the three (working) day courier, but if you want a faster postal service, please let me know.

Orders go in on a Thursday very early. I don’t hold this set in stock so it would need to be a special order, so I would need payment beforehand. It would take the manufacturer 2 weeks to make the order up for me. I would then dispatch the following day.
It can be made in either black (three finishes – please see our website, on the product options page) red or blue. Yellow and possibly orange might be available at the moment.

If you wish to go ahead, please let me know and provide me with your address so I can send you a formal invoice.

Best wishes
Mary Gee

Hmmm - mine is a 2005 car. They certainly look like rubber, but maybe they aren’t. How can I tell?
