But if corrosion has got deeply into the wire, it must be a hell of a job getting it all neutralised.

Impossible to remove once its got a hold. Best value is to replace the wing.
£400 gets you a cover up job ready for sale.

I agree with Martin. Arguably an acid dip might deal with most of it, but the cost of the strip and dip, and then the remedial work and coatings will likely exceed the cost of a new wing.
