I don`t understand Dan. Avon`s Blockley`s and excelsior`s on standard wheels are 19" The Avon am26 are only available in 18". M3w Take a look. John.

It looks like there are only four tire brands for the 19" wheel. If you get 18" wheels then the universe hits over fifty tires that will fit. One advantage of using 18" rims is that they come off and install very easy without possibly loosening the fender to do so.
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

I'm satisfied with my Blocleys. Avons lasted 6000 miles & I have over 3000 on Blockleys. Without measuring they give impression of being less than 1/2 worn.

Oh no - I appear to have a serious problem. My Avons have done 6,600 miles but still have over 4.5mm thread depth remaining. Any advice on what I may be doing wrong?

Oh no - I appear to have a serious problem. My Avons have done 6,600 miles but still have over 4.5mm thread depth remaining. Any advice on what I may be doing wrong? You just need to try harder. My Avons lasted 10,000 miles and my rear has done 15,000, still has 3mm of tread, but I am going to change it this winter

Okay, now I'm really confused...  I see guys referring to their Blockley's lasting XXXX miles and their Avons lasting more or less. So do the guys with the Avons have 18" wheels and also run 18" Blockleys, or do they have 18" AND 19" wheels? From just casual read, I would assume that the Blockleys and the Avons are interchangeable on the same rims. If I still don't get it, please enlighten me. If there are 19" Avons, what model/size are you running? Sorry I'm on the outside looking in and the window is not very clear...

The standard Avons are 4.0 x 19" as are the Blockley replacements.
The switch to an 18" rim allows a wider choice of tyres but as far as I know only a few racers are using these.

As I read one of the replied I thought all Avons were 18", obviously my mistake. I agree that with 18" wheels you get a wider range of choices for front tires. But even then, very few are designed for side loading and steering pressures.
