Hi all - I noticed on a drive out today that I had some squeaks intruding into the cabin.

When I got home I pushed up and down on the rear of the car and it seems the rear springs are squeaking like a cheap hotel mattress.

Looking under the car the springs are quite shielded - any ideas how and where to lube them to stop the squeaks?

I use "Chain Oil". I just lay the Oil on top of the spring. It seems to work itself in between the leafs. Learned this from "GOMOG".

I got some chain oil in an aerosol can, starts as an oily foam. I relied on it to seep into the gaps, and it seemed that the ride improved and the squeaks reduced - but squeak is still there and must be because I couldn't reach the back bit of the spring and didn't,t fancy dismantling the body shell. The 4/4 sport doesn't make it easy to get into the back passages.
But, I wondered if it's the shock absorber that's squeaking?
By the way, when I tested it I could smell the oversprayed oil cooking on the exhaust pipe. I thought it prudent to stay above 60 mph to keep the flames at bay - so that was a good test of the springs on the country roads. Ended up quite a long way from home.

Motorcycle Chain Lube is the stuff.

I use Halfords own, or Castrol
Both have fixed nozzles which allow you to direct a good squirt. It penetrates between the leaves, then dries (in a few seconds) to a white wax.
Best to jack up the back of the car first, to take the load off the spring.
Also, taking the rear wheels off gives easier access.

Duck oil is a good choice

Bike chain lube spray. Remove the rear shelf behind the seats for better access

Agree with use of chain oil spray. You can get very good access to the rear springs by simply removing the tool tray behind the seats.

Thanks all - you van only get to one side of the spring i.e the edge closest to the middle of the car - I take it the oil will seep in across the leaves?

Also is there any way you can get o the rear of the spring?

Just spotted the tool tray comment from Deejay - top tip I will have a look at that over the weekend.

My bedstead style squeaks were caused by dry rear suspension rubber bushings, the bits that the leaf springs are hung by. It was the two rearmost bushes that were the culprits.

Took the spare wheel off and exposed the ends of the springs, and liberally sprayed the bushings with rubber saving aerosol silicon spray from Halfords.

Worked a treat....until they dried out again....so every time I lubed the front suspension, I sprayed the rear bushes too.
